I live in Orchard Lakes Subdivision and have always wondered why other areas of both 270 and 40/64 have sound walls but this subdivision does not. In the winter when there are no leaves on the trees, you can see the highway signs and traffic when driving down Orchard Lakes Drive and almost feel like you are on the highway because it is SO close!
My son and his family live on Orchard Lakes and the noise level in their yard is unbelievably loud. My young grandsons love spending time outside but the noise makes that very unpleasant. It's difficult to have normal conversions while in their yard due to the sound of 270.
I live on the west side of 270 in the Huntington subdivision. The noise from the highway is incredibly loud. It’s enough to make it difficult to enjoy our yard with our two young children. So often, we can also hear the noise throughout the day and night in our house. A sound barrier is a necessity at this point.
I'm a Huntington resident (on the west side of 270) and my family also suffers from the extreme amount of road noise. I pursued this same issue about 15 years ago - got my state rep to come out and had MODOT come and do sound measurements from my backyard. The problem is that state law does not require MODOT to build a sound wall just because it's loud; it has to be part of a construction project that is already underway (like widening the highway), or they won't do it. Maybe if enough of us complain about it, they will consider doing it anyway.
