I, as well as several other women I know, were diagnosed with breast cancer before the age of 40!! The fact that insurance now “drives the bus” with health case decisions is enraging. When will our health care providers be able to go back to directing our care?!?
As someone who went through something very similar. It’s time for a change. At 29 I was diagnosed with gynecological cancer after 5 years of begging doctors and insurances to give me the tests I needed to save my life. How many more young women have to fight and die before eyes start opening. If it were your mother, daughter, niece…etc would you accept hearing “you’re to young.”
Even with a family history, insurance companies still deny coverage of what amounts to an x-ray. Something so basic and relatively inexpensive! This should be available to all women who's medical provider deems is necessary. A mammogram is uncomfortable. Your body parts are literally squeezed in a vice. Nobody would do this procedure without needing to.
My mom, Aunt, and great Aunt have all suffered from cancer and then some. My OB has denied me a mammogram since I was in my early 30’s. My best friend was just diagnosed with breast cancer at 37. Mammograms should be covered at any age, high risk or not.
Women, and young women are maturing a lot quicker ,my daughter has already began her first step into puberty! My daughter is 10! I was also 10 when I started! Our body’s are going through so many changes so quick, and a lot of us have a bigger risk! My grandma had breast canceer! Food has a lot more hormone in it now a days! My point is no matter the age of women we can always be at risk, and as said from many doctors before,”Better to catch it early!” How would anyone under the age of 40 know!? How many of us are actually able to afford a mammogram under the age of 40!? When we turn 40 most of us will lose insurance! That’s when you want to accept it!? Save lives! Make mammograms more accessible, and most importantly make being able to live more affordable! We shouldn’t have to pay for something we can’t control! Just as bad as insulin is expensive for diabetics, and epi pens are expensive for people with allergy’s ,mammograms are now known as being to expensive for women in general! So it doesn’t matter when your body goes through the most changes as a child growing in into an adult ,and women going through body changes after having baby’s ! That’s when your body’s going through it the most!
I am a breast cancer survivor, breast cancer doesn’t run in my family and I have two daughters so I opted for the genetic testing in order to protect them . Genetically none of us are predisposed to getting the type of cancer I had! This is even mORE reason for insurance companies to be onboard with this need of early prevention!! I CANT IMAGINE not having the insurance or resources to prevent cancer from spreading or getting out of control!! Please ; let’s change the outcome for so many women who get diagnosed before the age of 40! It is our responsibility as people to make it a healthy outcome for everyone !! Cancer is everyone’s responsibility!
