Graduation is not about the administration of the school, it’s about the students, families, and even teachers who spent four years together working towards a common goal. That goal is to walk across a stage to be recognized and move your tassel to the other side of your cap. The fact that the administration of the school thought this was a good idea, and is continuing to go through with it, shows how little they value the exact people they are supposed to be working for-what a shameful display. Give these kids what they deserve: the right to walk across the stage and be recognized for their hard work.
The single most important part of every high school graduation is the calling of students’ names, their walk across the stage, and the awarding of their diplomas.
To rob students of this rite of passage leaves unfinished their well-earned celebration of themselves for their hard work, perseverance, and accomplishments during their career as a student, academic or otherwise.
As a veteran teacher and current administrator, my team and I would never consider a change to our traditional graduation ceremony without input from our the students, their families, and our faculty. To do otherwise is disrespectful.
Now is time to do the right thing and restore the graduation ceremony with all its expected elements and traditions to the McBride High School Class of 2025.
As a high school teacher of more than a decade, the decision to rob these students of their moment to be recognized. For many students, this is THE culmination of their academic journey. This is a disgrace.
Walking across the stage and hearing people applaud you was critical to feeling like all that struggle and work was worth it. Don't take that away from kids just because you don't want to spend your afternoon doing something else.
Even my local middle school called all the name of the 8th graders headed to high school. I graduated in 1975, 50 years ago, from Lynnwood Senior High school in Lynnwood WA. Class of 350 students. Every student's name was called and the got the opportunity to cross that stage to receive their diploma. Breaking that tradition will create a lifetime of anger in all the students and parents. They will call for your dismissal.
LBUSD has been a disappointment in the last 4 years. However, of all the ones listed in the petition, the one that surprises me the most if they co-sign this graduation is Mr. Edward Samuels. He was principal of Hughes Middle School when both my kids graduated and 1 was the year of Covid. This man rallied his staff to make the best memorable graduation possible for over 500 students. Till this day both my kids; now in college remember Mr. Samuels as the best principal of their school years. He was kind, approachable, knew every student by name, showed that he really cared of how each one was doing. These are just a few things they say when remembering Mr. Samuels. I hope he is still that man and stands up for the McBride Students!
As a parent of a class of 2020 I can tell you it is not the same! My daughter was a valedictorian and due to Covid they did a drive through graduation. While it was amazing based on circumstances, it still sucked. And her class was way bigger than 170. I was never prouder to see her cross the stage and get her diploma from college in 2024!
This proposed graduation flies in the face of all that is expected and preferred by students and their families. Do not take away this tradition with something that reeks of impatience and jaded administrators. This is a capstone moment— lean into it, like a feast, not a fast food drive-through. The pandemic is over. Let these graduates have a standard graduation ceremony.
