Libraries are INCREDIBLY important for child development. If i didnt have access to a library that challenged my mind as a kid i would have turned out for the worse.

I am a lifelong library lover and librarian. I also believe in free access to information.

As a veteran teacher, I can attest to the crucial role played by library staff. Not only do they facilitate reading, but they build tremendously fruitful relationships with students who often don’t have many allies.

Shortly after retiring from my position as a library assistant in two KPS elementary libraries, I ran into a former student who was now 20 years old. Once we realized how we knew each other, she exclaimed, "You're the reason I love to read!" Providing access to a well-staffed elementary school library on a daily basis is a basic resource that can have a lasting positive impact on a students success in school. For many KPS students, the school library is the ONLY library they visit on a regular basis. In a school library, elementary students can develop relationships with library staff who know them and who work to meet their individual needs. The school library collection in each building is tailored to meet the needs of the students in the building, and a regular library staff member knows that collection. No army of well-intentioned volunteers can provide the same service. The disparity of library access between KPS elementary schools is astonishing. Some libraries are open all day every school day, while others are only open one day or half a day every week. That should not be acceptable! An administration that is serious about supporting literacy for their youngest students will provide funding to staff their elementary school libraries so that they can all be open every school day. You can't predict which relationships in a school setting will prompt a student, years later, to say, "You're the reason I love to read!". Fund the libraries!

I have 2 kids who have passed through Winchell Elementary and I cannot imagine how differently my kids' experiences would have been without a staffed library. I'm disgusted how governments at all levels in 2025 are either considering education and libraries as not worth the investment or are straight up attacking our places of learning. Anyone cutting funding and/or staff from schools and libraries should be ashamed of themselves.

Librarians are so important to help share the joys of literacy and foster a love of reading and seeking knowledge. For young students, so much excitement comes from being able to make their own literary choices and explore new and different worlds that exist in books. Not all children have the opportunities to visit the library while at home and I hope we can ensure every child can still experience it at school.

As a retired teacher, I cannot express the importance of having a library specialist, enough. At this time when education, schools, teachers, and librarians are all under attack, we must protect our children and their learning. Libraries, books, and librarians must all be protected.

As an a parent of an incoming kindergartener, I am saddened to see the realities Kalamazoo schools. We were told ‘these were the best schools’ in the district when looking for neighborhoods as new to Kalamazoo and to Michigan. The reality seems to be that all Kalamazoo schools are struggling. The Kalamazoo Promise is such a wonderful resource, but the children won’t be prepared for college without basic resources like librarians.

Librarians are so much more than checking in and checking out books. With only a few full time librarians in our district it is already so hard to seek true support from our school libraries. The middle school I attended had a library assistant, only able to check in and check out books, but even then I was able to foster such a deep love for reading and literature. High school and a full time librarian brought so much opportunity for learning. She was able to educate us on research tools, put in purchases for new books we requested, and provide collections of books for history and English projects. Librarians are so much more than just check in and check out attendants, they build community and caretaker spaces for learning and safety. Losing more staff in our school libraries shows a saddening commitment on the district’s part. We need a district that fully invests in our success in every way possible and a district that understands support staff is necessary to not overwork teachers or delegate jobs to staff that’s not in their job description.

As a current KPS student and avid reader I have been visiting the school library since elementary school. The school libraries offer students of any age access to reading anytime as well as amazing programs like global reading challenge and book clubs. Students need these resources for a proper education and losing them is a sure fire way four our students to lose their passion for reading, writing and media literacy in general. To be the best students we can be now and in the future, we need our libraries.
