Libraries are INCREDIBLY important for child development. If i didnt have access to a library that challenged my mind as a kid i would have turned out for the worse.
This petition almost directly quotes the email I sent to the committee prior to the meeting in Lavale last week. We should never take from those who need the most or leverage communities against each other to divide people. These facilities and the services they provide to the poorest communities in Allegany County make success possible for so many that otherwise wouldn’t have access to what they need to succeed.
Georges creek library has helped my kids learn and grow so much over the years from playgroups summer events lego nights movie nights story time in the park.. just meeting friends for the night at the library. They are still so young and have so much growing left to do and I'd love to continue to do alot of this growth in the library. Our town doesn't have alot for kids to do taking the library away isn't the answer
My husband and I are both retired. We both are able to enjoy the library and all that it has to offer. When we go in to check out a book we always see a familiar face! Whether it is someone using a computer, reading a paper, or scanning the bookshelves! It is a big part of the community!
My daughter loves going to the George’s creek library. We attend the story time sessions and we homeschool so the library is a big part of our schooling with the books and resources.
I grew up using the Westernport Library for reading, research, and tutoring younger kids. My Mother worked there. I know there are now so many needs in the community that the library meets. A library needs to be about who and how it helps, not just about the budget. It is a necessity for many. Story hour was always wonderful for kids who may or may not hear or read books at home, too. Keep the libraries open, especially in our smaller communities that have little else to help our neighbors.
I started going to the Westernport library ovr 30 years ago when I first move here . I love the feel of a book in my hands . And now that I'm older it a treasure to be able to go to the library and pick out books it's close to home .
Libraries are essential to small towns, especially towns like Westernport and Lonaconing with a high population of young school-age kids who need a computer to do homework and older adults who need help with making copies, sending faxes, and researching local historical events. This end of Allegany County has a high rate of poverty so many people do not have smart phones, a computer or internet at home and rely on the library for help filling out job applications, paying bills online, and making copies of important documents. As a former therapist who grew up in Westernport and walked to the library every week, it is imperative that people have a safe, clean place to go to take classes like yoga and painting, play games like chess, read the paper to stay up-to-date on current events, attend story time for parents with little ones who wish to connect with others, have book discussions of all genres, where teens can play educational games on the computers, and readers of all ages can stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer while expanding their knowledge and escaping into another world for a while. Please please please keep these smaller branches open so that the residents may have access to information that they can only get via internet. To close would place the residents at a great disadvantage. Thank you!
My daughter loved Westernport Library from the time she was tiny and now my grandbabies love Westernport and George’s Creek libraries! We drive over 30 minutes to get to Story Time and to pick out books. My kindergarten kiddos also loved visiting the library and having visitors come to read to them. Many of my former students have library cards and visit the Westernport branch library to check out books and use the facility for homework. Please keep the library branches for those residents in the Western part of the county!
