My husband and I have advocated hard for him and finally we were able to secure a 504 educational plan for him this past October. The relief I feel knowing that he will have protections and accommodations entering middle school is unmeasurable. With his 504 plan he has THRIVED. School has become less of a place of anxiety and insecurity and more of a place of learning, growth, and understanding. My son's grades, confidence, and performance are all testaments to how much his 504 has changed his life for the better. And now his own home-state is working to pull the rug out from under him. Please, do not rip the rug out from under our kids. They're only getting started in this life. Please fight to keep section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

Without them, he no doubt would have fallen behind and gotten discouraged affecting both his academics and self-esteem. The individualized plan provides more support to both the teachers and the students and would be devastating if those resources were lost.

A 504 opens communication between the student, family and teacher allowing all to be involved in the best decisions for the child to set up the most appropriate learning environment to be successful. The schools have a team that is trained to help with the 504 process and determining what is best for the students needs. Eliminating this would be detrimental for all and is only causing damage to our school systems.
