As a native Erieite, I remember visiting the Niagara when it was on State St. It is a significant part of Erie history. The crew should be from the USA! I agree with demanding a public meeting! Seeing it sit uncovered is a disgrace to our American history!
I am a high school student who has been greatly impacted by learning about Niagara, Oliver Hazard Perry and the Battle of Lake Erie. When I first learned about our nation’s amazing victory that day - how a crew composed of ragtag volunteers and raw recruits defeated an entire British squadron for the first time in history - the incredible courage, grit and determination these men had to continue the fight when all hope seemed lost - I was struck with this thought; THESE ARE THE THINGS THAT SHAPED OUR NATION! And yet, many people of today’s generation know little to nothing about this incredible victory. As a high school student, I can say firsthand that these things are not taught in the history books. The younger generation needs to know about our Nation’s incredible past, and the Brig Niagara is one of the few links left to preserve the incredible legacy of the men who gave up their homes, their families, their very lives for the freedom of our country!! Don’t allow this link to break. Honor the sacrifices of noble Americans like Oliver Hazard Perry and James Lawrence. “Don’t give up the ship!”
There are so few historic monuments and testaments of everything this area did to advance our freedom and make the United States what it is today! Why let a piece of that slip away? The Niagara is a tribute and remembrance of the war in 1812 and all those who fought and lost their lives! Visiting the Niagara was always a must see when our families went to Erie on vacations! I was devastated to learn she might not be there when the Tall Ships sail next year!!!
I am a Retired LIFE LONG Resident of Erie, Pa. I was absolutely OUTRAGED, amazed and DISHEARTENED to find out about these "Going Ons" behind the scenes regarding Our Beloved Brig Niagara...I cannot believe we are absolutely "BAMBOOZELED" by the Red Tape and Bureaucracy of the PHMC...and Now , the latest info states that the Niagara won't be able to participate in 2025 TALL SHIPs event ...Now its starting to have a NEGATIVE Effect on our local economy...THIS IS OUTRAGIOUS !!!
Growing up in Erie on "The North Coast" stimulated an avid interest in the unique and historical significance of the Great Lakes. From an early age, Commodore Perry's accomplishment fueled an interest in tall ships and fighting sail for me. Niagara's bare hull on its keel blocks near the marinas at the foot of State Street birthed my respect for her. When they fitted her out with a deck, masts, and guns it was even stronger. I so wish that I still lived in the area when they took the spectacular step to rejuvenate her to float again! I would volunteer in a heartbeat to participate in the crew of this living history. In 2013, I did travel to be a part of the Bicentennial Commemoration of the Battle of Lake Erie during the Perry 200 event. It would be an unimaginable dereliction of public duty to permit this beautiful historical ship to languish in disrepair.
I no longer live in Texas, but when I lived in the Austin area I frequented Peter Pan. It's a great event for families or even to take a date. There's so little of original Austin left...please save Peter Pan!!
