Florida is a state where families are exposed to increasing heat index on a yearly basis, which means increased need for basic utilities such as AC, to allow for livable temperatures. I have heard many families indicate they have had to pay over 500$ per month. Florida also provides little opportunity for low cost energy efficient upgrades like solar panels, windows, doors, and other factors that could reduce the cost of some of the utilities within the state. With cost of living having skyrocketed in florida overall in comparison to the national average, many families could benefit from some reduction of utility bills.
My electric bill has almost doubled since the smart meter was installed. Electrical usage has been consistent so the only reason it has gone up is because of the smart meter. When I call JCPL the wait time is 3hrs. I opted for a call back and when they did the woman transfered me to smart meter customer service and no one picked up. I just got automated messages and no person to solve my issue. This is so outrageous. JCPL needs to be part of the solution not the problem. Unfortunately they have chosen to be the latter. Weas customers need answers to these problems not be ignored.
Aside from the higher bills, charging extra for opting out of a smart meter seems unfair, it feels like customers are being pressured into compliance. This tactic is often justified by utility companies on the grounds that traditional meter reading requires more labor and logistical resources, but it can come across as a penalty for wanting to maintain control over your privacy and home.
For many people, it's not just about the cost—it’s about having the choice to opt out without feeling coerced. These extra charges can feel like a subtle way to eliminate any resistance to the new system.
In some areas, customers and advocacy groups have pushed back on these fees and have sometimes managed to reduce or eliminate them. If this is a major concern for you, it might be worth exploring whether local groups or legal challenges are being mounted to protect customers' rights in your region. You might also want to check if any alternatives exist, such as requesting analog meters that are still compliant with newer regulations but don’t come with the same privacy or control concerns.
