Studies have already shown that by incorporating nap times for overnight workers it will improve their decision making and care for patients. I think it’s also safe to say it could have prevented this tragedy as well. The healthcare system needs to starts protecting their nurses and normalizing sleep breaks if they want to prevent this in the future. Cases like this make people second guess wanting to become a nurse, let alone a night shift nurse (which there is always a shortage of already.) If you want better staffing you need to support ,and take better care of, the ones you already have.
I am an RN working in the Metro Atlanta area for over 30 years. I was shocked at the sentence that is allowed for this incident. She is paying for this every day of her life no matter what. Please excuse this accident taking into consideration all the facts around it. She as all nurses need respect for all they do. I have discovered that when someone needs a nurse, nurses are priceless. When someone does not need a nurse at the time, they are disregarded.
It all begins with the working conditions of our healthcare workers. Why do hospitals here start most new grads out on night shift? I’ve been a nurse 20+yrs and experienced hallucinations from sleep deprivation when I was on nights. 12 hour night shifts need mandatory rest periods!
