This really is existential: without a fair voting system, we risk following other countries down the path towards extremist populist politics. If we want to preserve British values we must preserve our democracy by making sure everyone has a voice.

I find it highly ironic that Trump wishes to attend a show where love and compassion shine through in a story full of social injustice. Trump IS the social injustice; cracking down on those who dissent, who protest, and those who are just different than him. I've seen and made signs that quote "Do You Hear the People Sing?" for the many protests against Trump and his administration. Actors boycotting the show because of the attendance of an oppressor is perfectly in line with the very soul of this work and should be respected.

I was in theater. Theater has a fantastic way of asking questions about the society that we live in. I do not think that it would be appropriate for a president who signs oppression into law should watch a show where one of the main story beats is oppressed people being slaughtered.

Donald Trump should not be deciding what should or should not be presented at our National Cultural Center. It should represent all cultures of America. Our diverse audiences then are the ones who get to make the decisions about what they want to attend or not attend.

Les Mis is the protest musical. It is for all the issues where people care about democracy. From the Communards who read Les Miserables to strengthen themselves to battle to the death for the Paris Commune to Hongkongers singing Do You Hear the People Sing in the streets when they closed Apple newspaper and cut off their freedoms of the people of Hong Kong, to the UK Les Mis fans who commented on the UK Les Mis social media celebrating Charles's coronation that maybe Les Mis social media should not celebrate a coronation, to Les Mis itself having its climax atop the barricades fighting for democracy, education, the social contract, and the Rights of Man and the Citizen, and Human Rights more generally, Les Miserables has always been about protest, all around the world, in every language. It is not only patriotic for the actors to boycott this, it is also in keeping with both the spirit of the novel of Les Miserables and the musical Les Mis, and I expect nothing less from the cast. I will wear my Enjolras xylophone vest to the next protest I go to in support of this courageous and correct decision.

The arts help lead us to greater understanding of ourselves, each other, and our shared humanity. Artists, just like everyone, have a right to free speech and acts of protest - and at the same time to continue enriching us with their art.

Theater, books, music, visual arts all have the potential for helping us to experience our world, our lives, in deeper, richer ways. Support for the arts is support for our very humanity, even if we find ourselves challenged by the voices we hear.

Art (and particularly theatre) by its very nature makes a statement. Les Miserables itself illustrates impassioned people standing up to oppression. I fully support the actors who are choosing to protest by not performing for a man who represents the very thing the show opposes.
