Epilepsy is a cruel condition that the person has no control over. My brother was fired from his job because he had several seizures and it ripped his world apart. Some people choose to stay on pip benefits for their condition but others long for a normal life of studying and working. To treat these people like it’s their fault is disgraceful. There is no control over these seizures even through medication, ear plugs Special glasses etc. Through no fault of his own this man is being discriminated against and there needs to be more understanding and help around this subject.
Fear mongering about trans people is leading to politicians and governments to meddle in decisions that should be made between the child, their parents/guardians, and medical experts. When I kid, we simply didn't know what trans even was. Trans kids struggled alone often all the way into adulthood before before learning how they felt had a name. It was a different problem. Whether not a child should have trans related care should be left up to medical expects on a case by case basis based on rigorous psychological evaluation. An outright ban not only puts children struggling with gender dysphoria at increased risk of suicide, but can also set them back behind their peers. Instead of building and planning a future, they will be forced to endure a wrong puberty and spend all their energy struggling to cope with that.
I myself am trans and did not have the ability to transition until I was 23. The time I spent struggling socially and trying to cope with gender dysphoria forced me miss out many important networking opportunities which are essential for young people starting their careers. This kind of ban of discriminates against trans people and says that it is more important that cisgender children be protected against the possibility a mistake being made than it is for transgender kids to have access to the life-saving care they will need.
I use my 10 each year and definitely need more visits available when I have my breakdowns, currently i have to ration to no less than a 1 month gap between visits when at times i could really use weekly or fortnightly but can't knowing that I would need 2 months between sessions which just isn't doable with my complex issues, maybe a similar program to the mymedicare but just for psychology would be beneficial for those that need extra help
I don't know why the government thought cutting this was a good idea.
If people are struggling to function, they cannot contribute properly to the community and the economy. Investing in people's mental health and helping them get back on track will improve Australia's economic productivity in the long run, justifying the money spent on it.
Coming from a family that has had its share of struggles with mental health over the years, I know that there is deep value in psychological services. I absolutely support the initiative to increase the number of sessions rebated through Medicare. The good this will do for many people is invaluable.
People are hurting and there is more need for support than at any time in the past. 10 sessions is not adequate while people are also dealing with cost of living increased, and it places a significant burden on individuals as well as practitioners who are burning out at record numbers.
Show you take mental health seriously and let people have a choice in what services they access and where, and at a level that can be therapeutic.
