Cats do not deserve to be declawed NO MATTER WHAT THE SITUATION IS. It’s absolutely disgusting these practices are still being used. It’s 2025 y’all not the 80s. You want a cat that doesn’t scratch? Don’t get one at all then. It’s ridiculous to expect an animal to stop a normal behavior just to benefit your lifestyle needs. I hope this women feels guilty and horrible for the rest of her life. She should NEVER be able to adopt another pet and I know damn well the ASPCA can stop that and I don’t know ASPCA maybe educate people next time about the animal they are adopting and tell them it’s NORMAL. Don’t give up an innocent life just to make a cage empty or receive the money of the adoption fee. I used to work in the field and it’s an absolute shame to see stories like this be easily prevented. I hope everyone involved in this case feels ashamed and guilty for what they have done and do not deserve to work in the field. We need more people in this field that actually care about the animals more than the money. May the beautiful baby rest in peace and justice is served.
No veterinarian worth their salt can consciously declare that declawing is humane. It is an awful procedure that is toe tip amputation. Many countries have banned it as the barbaric practice that it is. There are many safer, saner, healthier, and completely humane options, such as nail trimming and claw caps. I have three cats, down from 16 a few years ago. NONE of them were EVER declawed. I'd rather live with clawed furniture than cats that have no claws. Besides, those little pin pricks of clawtips when they are cuddling with me and kneading don't hurt much and they let me know my cat is comfortable and happy. If you are a part of the AAHA and are complicit in declawing, and think it's so humane and painless, how about you get YOUR fingertips and toe tips amputated and see how YOU like it?
Declawing is vile and so painful for the cat. It’s legitimate mutilation. I will never support an organization that declaws other than a legitimate and severe medical reason.
Where to even begin. The challenges that our fellow citizens have to endure. All because of humans. To protect their welfare should be our responsibility. Declaring is mutilation. No excuses. Mutilation is not protecting them. It is adding to their already heavy uphill battles. If someone wants to declaw, then perhaps they should have all 10 of their first digits cut off. That is what happens. Mutilation. If you can't see past your rigid way of thinking and do not have an animals welfare in mind, then don't have one as a companion. All shelters need to be NO-KILL and NO vet should ever declaw.
This is just one of many possible complications of declawing, which is an inhumane and barbaric practice, these poor cats quality of life is going to be forever decreased, they will have arthritis earlier in life than non-declawed cats, nerve damage from the unnatural way they must walk, an unnecessary surgery that will increase the risk that they get an infection in their open wounds that don’t even need to exist, and as you can imagine from their pov, it causes mental stress and other mental health issues like depression. I strongly recommend that anyone considering declawing a cat thinks again, it’s not worth all the bad stuff that will happen to them if they get declawed nor the risk of infection from their wounds. Either keep your furniture somewhere where your cat is not going to be able to access it and encourage them to use a scratching post and/or cat tree or rehome your cat to someone who will accept that cats need to scratch and has your cat’s best interests in mind.
Declawing is the equivalent of having the last joint on every one of your fingers and toes chopped off, with the open wounds on the stumps superglued together, and then demanding that you do all of your everyday activities like nothing happened. It is horribly painful, and can cause permanent pain and both physical and mental health problems for the cat. Anyone who declaws a cat should not own one, they obviously don’t even like them much if they’re willing to inflict so much cruelty on them, they need to get a stuffed animal instead.
Declawing helps no one in the end. People declaw their cats thinking it will make them easier to deal with, thinking this will make them able to keep a cat. Cats don’t respond well to surgery naturally. They are in pain and scared and often gain mood problems or no longer use their litter box. Sometimes they can’t even walk properly. They endure so much suffering and in the end, their owners get rid of them anyways. They get put down only after being given up on my the people who maimed them. Legally maimed them. It breaks my heart.
I worked in Animal rescue and saw how people would surrender their cats when they would stop using the litter box due to pain from declawing. It’s inhumane and unfair. But euthanasia is never an option when surrendered.
Declawing cats is inhumane and not part of their nature at all. They need them to survive and to defend themselves! To many complications and deaths have happened because of declawing and it’s just such an unnecessary thing to do to them. Please stop this horrific practice and let them be the cats they are suppose to be!! We don’t declaw our dogs our other animals so it’s not fair to them. If people can’t handle the memories and scratches they leave behind then don’t own a cat. Don’t modify them to your standards!!
