This is a great local resource in the area to those with small children. Please think hard before you remove this resource. We get a lot of rain here and it’s ideal for when the weather is bad. There are very few places for little ones in the Conwy Valley. Make the right decision and you’ll gain a lot more local support
Another example as to why mergers are a disaster zone especially in education. As a former student, I can remember Lampeter being acknowledged as one of the finest theological and archaeological institutions in Europe let alone the UK. Upon revisiting the university in 2022 I was taken aback by just how badly neglected it had become with playing courts removed and much of the student accommodation being unoccupied. Along with the lack of investment in the university itself, this has had a detrimental effect on the town which has slowly declined with the university since the merger and subsequently had a profound negative economic, social and cultural impact. I can see no justification for moving the courses other than to say that I believe the future of Lampeter lies in rediscovering its true qualities and mission as a wholly independent institution.
I was an international student in Lampeter from 2004 to 2007. The time I spent there is one of the highlights of my life. There's a serenity to the place that I haven't found anywhere else, and the town was so safe that I could go for a walk alone at midnight without a care in the world. Lampeter is a uniquely ideal location for higher learning, and that alone makes it beyond puzzling to see a decision to take that away. Where else are you going to find such a peaceful, friendly, welcoming, and safe atmosphere for your academic pursuits?
Lampeter is a unique place to learn. As a quiet, rural location Lampeter gives students who do not wish to live in a high populous area a peaceful environment to learn in.
I would always recommend Lampeter as a place to study, having done so myself for three years. It would be a crying shame for Lampeter to loose the ability to provide undergraduate students the chance to flourish within the beautiful Welsh countryside.
The heart will literally be ripped out from Lampeter. The University is fundamentally the centre of the town, the impact that it will have on not only the university students, staff but the town as a whole. As a parent, this was the only university which felt safe, homely and actually interested in their prospective students. As opposed to her being another number which was felt in other universities! We attended two open days and staff there were genuingly interested. These staff members helped my daughter achieve a BA, MA and a PGCert! I'm not going to forget the porters either, students union or the chaplaincy, as these people play an important part also. This is a family, Lampeter University is a family, made up of a diverse collection of individuals from all backgrounds and this is embraced wholly. There have been many individuals who moved to Lampeter as a student and never returned home, staying local to Lampeter as they felt this was now their home. Hiraeth. The closure will be detrimental to the towns businesses, especially the hospitality industry and the Welsh Government need this to be taken into consideration also.
this is one of the oldest institutes of her education in the UK if UWTSD needs to end courses on a campus Lampeter should never have been considered. there is also the fact the small town is built around the university and the town economy relies on catering to Lampeter university students. without the taught courses on this campus people dependant on the jobs it provides become out of work homeless even. if the university dies the town also dies... i am a student whos course started at Lampeter campus and was moved 28 miles away during my second year yet there was not extra student support to ensure students are able to attend lectures on another campus... i aplied to Lampeter to study at Lampeter i do not want to attend lectures. considering the amount of money i paid to study i am deeply unhappy with the university for forcing me to attend lectures on a different campus 28 miles further away!!
Having known many people over the years who studied at Lampeter, it is devastating to hear the undergraduate program is under threat. Higher education is being attacked from all sides and major cuts like this have to be stopped.
I came from the US for an MA in English, 1981-82, and my family now has been coming back ever since, living in Lampeter several times, on sabbatical from Montana State University where I'm an English professor, and on vacations. I know that undergrads from the US would love to come to Lampeter, if there were degree programs for them (let's face it, far nicer than Carmarthen). Losing this historic University would be a great shame and a catastrophe in many ways.
I am so sad to hear this news. Lampeter is an amazing place and has, quite literally, been the making of my son. During both his undergraduate degree and his masters, the support and help he received from the staff team was outstanding. I cannot believe that this opportunity will be taken from future generations and Wales will allow it's oldest degree awarding body go to the wall like this. A rethink is greatly needed!
