What has Trump ever done for West Virginia? Both of my grandfathers owned a piece of Spruce Mountain, and it has a special place in my heart. This whole thing nauseates me.
Spruce Knob is a Natural Landmark, Not a Political Billboard!
Renaming Spruce Knob to Trump Mountain is a blatant attempt to politicize a natural treasure that belongs to all West Virginians, not just a select group of supporters. Changing it for political reasons disrespects generations of West Virginians who value it as a landmark, not a campaign prop.
National and state parks, mountains, and forests should not be used to memorialize divisive political figures—especially when their legacy is still unfolding. This sets a dangerous precedent for renaming more of our natural spaces based on shifting political tides.
West Virginia deserves better. Instead of wasting time on performative renaming efforts, our representatives should focus on jobs, infrastructure, education, and the economy—things that actually improve the lives of West Virginians.
Spruce Knob’s name represents the rugged beauty and independence of our state. Public land is not a political trophy.
When I was 30 weeks pregnant we went camping at Spruce Knob. It was the last trip my husband and I took before welcoming our son into the family. This place holds a very special place in my heart. I would hate to see it change to Trump Mountain. This is a place of beauty and inclusivity which are tenants Trump does not exemplify.
To grow up in West Virginia for 22 years and to attend WVU, it’s quite embarrassing to see this be introduced in a resolution. I left WV back in 2022 after graduating due to a lack of job opportunities. I would love to return to the state, but our lack of opportunities makes it very difficult. This should be something the state should focus on (retaining their young citizens) rather than renaming a significant geographic landmark for a man who has done very little for our state.
Also, it’s embarrassing this resolution was introduced by a younger adult as well. Elias Coop-Gonzalez needs to do better when representing the voices of West Virginians and do a better job representing my generation. He needs to understand that Spruce Knob represents its Appalachian heritage instead of bowing down to a “politician”. Embarrassing.
I visit Spruce Knob throughout the year backpacking and camping and sharing outdoor experiences with my friends and grandchildren. It is pure wilderness and the spruce can be heard whispering in the winds. I doubt that the current president Trump even knows what a spruce is. I think that this president is so controversial that placing his name on this park is a disgrace. This president has no love for our national parks, wilderness and its people and animals. He is happy to see their demise. What is wrong with the WV lawmakers. Have you no respect for our lands that we cherish. Believe me, this president could care less about this national park or any of our beloved national land!! This is a disgrace!!!
Keep SPRUCE KNOB a beautiful place and keep the name. Don’t bring politics into this beautiful park.
Renaming Spruce Knob, West Virginia’s highest peak, to “Trump Mountain” disregards its long-established historical, cultural, and environmental significance. Spruce Knob is an integral part of the Monongahela National Forest, valued for its unique ecosystem and its role in conservation and outdoor recreation. Changing its name to reflect any political figure, past or present, undermines its nonpartisan, natural heritage and sets a precedent that politicizes public lands. Preserving the original name respects its identity, honors the generations who have cherished it, and ensures it remains a symbol of West Virginia’s natural beauty rather than a political statement.
Born and raised West Virginian forced to leave WV to find work. I currently live in the DC metro area but still constantly advocate for my home state. My coworkers and friends always ask me where to go and what to do when planning their weekends to the Mountain State. Please don’t make me have to recommend “Trump Mountain” then go into a whole explanation of name history and why lawmakers in WV can’t seem to come up with a way to keep WV natives from leaving in droves but instead waste time and ultimately money on publicity stunts.
My family has been in West Virginia in Pendleton (Upper Tract), Tucker (St George), Randolph (Osceola/Glady) and Pocahontas County (Boyer) as early as the 1740s. It has been and always will be Spruce Knob to me - it is part of my family heritage that will never be taken away.
My wife and I have hiked Spruce Knob many times and made so many wonderful memories there. The fact that this is even in consideration is disgraceful. It makes me ashamed to be a Mountaineer.
