A Rare Desert Milkweed Population Is About to Be Lost Forever

This is a documented population of Desert Milkweed (Asclepias subulata)—one of the Mojave Desert's most important native wildflowers.

Desert Milkweed is essential to the survival of the Monarch Butterfly, serving as both a host plant for its caterpillars and a vital nectar source. In our harsh desert environment, this species plays a unique role in supporting monarchs during their winter migration and throughout the Southwest.

Unlike ornamental "drought-tolerant" plants, Desert Milkweed is virtually absent from our city's landscapes. If this site is developed, this population will disappear, and the species will likely be lost from Bullhead City's incorporated limits.

This isn't just the loss of a few plants. It's the loss of critical wildlife habitat, the loss of biodiversity, and another piece of our Mojave Desert natural heritage erased forever.

As development continues, invasive species spread, and non-native landscaping replaces our native flora, populations like this become increasingly rare. Once they're gone, we cannot simply recreate decades of natural ecological relationships.

Please help protect this irreplaceable Desert Milkweed population before it's too late. Every signature sends a message that our native wildlife and natural heritage are worth preserving.
