Crosswalk safety is a crucial topic that impacts pedestrians and drivers worldwide. With the increasing number of accidents and injuries at crosswalks, there is a growing need for improved safety measures and infrastructure. Petitions on this topic often focus on implementing better signage, installing traffic lights, and enforcing stricter penalties for drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians.
One notable petition with thousands of signatures calls for the installation of pedestrian-activated traffic lights at hazardous crosswalks, citing incidents of near misses and fatalities. Another petition highlights the importance of educating both drivers and pedestrians on crosswalk safety to reduce the risk of accidents.

Houston is already car-centric as it is currently even despite projects meant to increase pedestrian safety and encourage public transit ridership. This raised crosswalk is a necessary safety feature that not only prevents pedestrian deaths. It contributes to reducing driver speeds so as to prevent collisions.
Do not remove the raised crosswalk! If anything, put more of them throughout the city. This will save lives!
We moved to Montrose from West Houston because it is a more walkable neighborhood. Since we have been here (5 years) my husband has been hit by a car, I narrowly avoided being hit, our 80 year old neighbor was hit in a crosswalk. Please do not take away any crosswalk features that help walker safety!
Traffic crash injuries and deaths surged in Houston last year under Whitmire’s philosophy on “city progress”. 345 people died on Houston city streets last year. 119 of those people were pedestrians. Mayor Whitmire has repeatedly put the luxury of a 10 second faster commute for cars over safety for all road users. I request that you walk across this crosswalk with your grandkids Mr. Mayor…both before and after you rip it out.
