Victories in County Fairs

I raised my kids in 4-H and because of our suburban lifestyle, could only participate with small animals like rabbits and cavies. They ended up with a 12-year career showing rabbits not only locally at the Fair, but across the country and this small spark is what lit their passion for agriculture and environmental science. They now both study at the college of agriculture in agriculture policy and environmental science and are planning careers supporting agriculture in deep and meaningful ways. And it all started with a love of rabbits and showing off their knowledge at local fairs. Now more than ever we need kids who know how livestock interacts with our food chain, especially kids in suburban and urban areas. Supporting the whole system starts with the young.

I grew up showing livestock. My first animal was a rabbit that another farm sponsored for me because we couldn’t afford to purchase one. As I grew and learned, I graduated from rabbits to poultry and then goats and cattle. It is incredibly ignorant and ableist to eliminate the small animal category as not everyone is physically able to show a larger animal, has the space, or can afford to do so. You are needlessly condemning those of a valuable experience.

These kids deserve to display and educate the public on their project animal same as any other entry. It's their Fair time too. Small Stock animals are an amazing opportunity for families that don't have the space to house livestock. Not everyone knows that Small Stock showing is an option. Having these animals on display where the public can see and learn about showing them is the best time to introduce new families to the project.

I grew up in Napa and loved visiting the county fair. One of my favorite spots to see was the small animal barn. I now have twins that previously joined 4H and are now in FFA and showed poultry their first year. One of the best things about the small animal barn is that people of all ages can meet the exhibitors and pet some of these smaller/ less intimidating animals. It’s also a great introduction into 4H and FFA for first time showers and those who may want to get involved. Taking this away would be devastating to those who have put in the hard work with their animals and to the younger generation coming up behind them.

The small barn is where my special needs uncle takes a break from the music, lights and hustle and bustle of the fair. He talks to the kids, pets their animals and connects with his community. The small barn fair week exhibit is important for the WHOLE community… young and old! Come on fair board, let’s prioritize our community and work together!

I may not live anywhere near Napa, but this sort of thing could happen anywhere! We need to fully support our youth. Small animals are not only a viable form of agriculture for any size farm, but they are often the entry level livestock for getting kids involved. Please, keep 4h accessible and fun for all kids!

Both my children raised 4H animals. This taught them so many valuable life lessons and helped shaped their choices for their future. They both work locally and contribute back the Napa County significantly. Our family is one example of many of how important 4H is to our youth. It teaches them responsibility and values. There is no good reason to take this away from the children.

The Fair Board Members need to rethink their decision to cut the Youth Programs. The lessons our young participants learn provide valuable experiences and long lasting opportunities. The benefits extend beyond the Fair.

This is one area of the fair that doesn’t cost money, is a community building activity, and is critical for young kids to learn real life skills. Having small animals at the fair got my kid interested in 4H.

I think it’s really important to foster a world where youth are prioritized. This program allows America’s youth to save money for college, and explore what it means to be responsible. Both will absolutely benefit society in the long run, and even have positive impacts now! Letting children know they matter, and that they are heard is crucial for child development, and I shouldn’t have CHILDREN soliciting on my doorstep because ADULTS are threatening their childhood experience. This is an important program and funding should not be cut.
