I’m a high school senior right now who’s doing a fellowship under the W.O.W. Project, whose main focus is to advocate for Chinatown’s gentrification and the mega jail project. Through this fellowship, I’ve got to engage in discussions about the history of NYC Chinatown and the voices of Asian American immigrants who settled here, and I am here to fight for their voices to be heard and for this mega jail project to be dismantled. The construction would severely impact not only the lives of those currently living in Chinatown, but future generations as well. Please, Major Eric Adam’s, I urge you to stop this project and protect my people. Your people. Our people.
There are so many elders that do not need to be living right next to a superplaza of criminals. This jail is being paid by old people, poor people, and those that can’t afford 70k for ONE inmate a year. It’s unfair to place such a ginormous criminal facility in such a homely and vulnerable environment. Chinatown is filled with nostalgia, memories, and respectful people. Do not place such a dangerous facility in the heart of a home for so many.
