The hours of work put in, the missed opportunities and at times not even being able to go to work…. People who aren’t in it simply to not realise the ripple effect. I am at an age now where I won’t even be able to retire like other people, I am probably going to be on my death bed and still being the carer. It’s soul destroying
I've been a foster carer for 14 years. We have 3 children with high and complex medical and disability needs. We have had no respite for the past 2 years and less then 4 weeks over the past 12 years. As a carer, we receive no sick leave, holiday leave, no superannuation. Also, as a carer, we don't qualify to apply for a bank loan for anything as we are both stay at home carers.
Caring for my mum with Alzheimer's is a constant struggle not just with daily life but with organising multiple assessments to access aged care services as well. It is mentally draining and rarely have time for myself.
I've been a CARER for a long time - vulnerable people everywhere deserve to be cared for if they have family/siblings or friends who want to do it. There are issues surrounding Super but overall Carers regardless should be allowed to (1) open Super Accounts and (2) able to 'Carer Pension/work' (like salary) sacrifice as they want and need and (3) never have any taxed components or restrictions for the privilege of taking on such significant work or it considered as income at any stage just as the main INCENTIVE to retain and encourage future Carers especially into the 'difficult' Carer roles - mental health etc.
Carers are not paid enough nor get super. Being paid ~$450 a week for 8 hours a day, 7 days a week — come on. That is not Australian. To have a private carer look after a person for those hours would cost $8,400 per week. The Government is getting away with cheap labour. Any employer that did this would be legally punished.
Unpaid care comes from a place of love but should not impact a carer financially in such a devastating way. If all the carers stopped their caring roles tomorrow our community would fall apart. Governments need to recognise and reward carers by paying super.
I work in the Disability Sector. I had to cut my hours to part time for over 2 years to support both my parents. I was constantly in the phone to the aged care facility fir my mother, deali g with "issues" or the home care staff for my father. There was not enough funds to support the amount of hours required to support my father at home. I was paying people privately from my wages and providing the support myself to support him. I lost a lot of wages and Superannuation. They lived 45 kilometres away from me. Unpaid carers contribute an enormous amount of time and money that the government would have to provide if not for the time and effort put in by the inpaid support. We deserve to at the minimum be provided Superannuation contributions.
The Government is getting away with underpaying all carers. Clearly, the Government is abusing the kindness of these people looking after their loved ones. It is not like there is much choice either. The main reason I’m a carer is because I don’t trust the elderly care system. The Government is useless regulating the industry. I fear there are many stories yet to surface, as is occurring in the child caring centres. Just shocking!!!!
