I have driven this road every day for 10 years for work and there is no way I would ever let my children walk this route. This is a short sighted and clearly ill considered decision, from someone who obviously doesn’t know the road. Dorset council get a grip, you should be adding free bus routes not taking them away!! All you are doing is adding to traffic volumes, pollution and putting children’s lives at risk.
This is a crazy decision, having lived in Charlton Marshall when my kids started school, I personally know many of the families this will impact. If we still lived there, there is no way my child would be walking along that ridiculously thin and BUSY bit of road alone + the trailway in the dark!!! The council have said children can walk 3 miles, as an avid hiker I know that's a good hours journey, 6 miles each day for a child carrying school bags ect is not reasonable and £900 a year for one childs bus pass is insane. The bus is going that way and has been free for children in Charlton for years so why change now.
This is a terrible decision to take DCC. Walking along that pavement twice a day is so so dangerous. How long before a terrible accident happens? The trailway is not a choice it's dark in the winter months as there is no lighting and also after rain muddy. Also this leads straight back onto the dangerous road and again the path through Blandford St Mary is also narrow. Please reverse your decision before there is a fatality.
Our roads are busier and more dangerous than ever. Charlton Marshall is clearly not a safe route and the proposal of charging for the bus will force parents to drive. This is against the governments plans for an environmentally sound future. Putting more cars on the road or children in danger. It’s preposterous that it’s even a consideration to penalise village living when so much of our county struggles from this.
As a cyclist and living in banchory I'd love to explore further and I'm unable to drive due to medical conditions. This would be a valuable thing for our community.
