Our son would not be the student he is today without amazing learner center teachers at both Pierce and BHS. They were integral in fostering his confidence and independence to thrive academically. Please don’t jeopardize the same opportunities for other students.
Brookline's education system and supports such as the Learning Center are we chose to raise our family here and pay extraordinary costs to live here. Two of my young children rely on the LC for support to be successful in school. This is an injustice to our children's education if any resources are cut from eh Learning Center. It's shameful of the town of Brookline to expect such high standards from its residents but not provide high standards to its youngest and most needing residents.
The Learning Center is vital for ensuring the safety of special needs kids. By providing tailored support to kids with special needs, the Learning Center staff make kids feel included at school. In so doing, the Learning Center helps special needs kids maintain their sense of self-worth in a general education environment that is emotionally and cognitively challenging for them.
Before Learning Center support, our 7 yo daughter tried to run away from school several times (once, successfully). Learning Center support has significantly increased her willingness to attend school; and it has significantly decreased her attempts to run away. Thanks to the Learning Center support, our daughter is no longer overwhelmed by feeling like, in her words, "a weirdo, a failure, and an alien".
In short, support from the Learning Center is *the* foundation upon which special needs kids like our daughter can access general classroom.
We know that there are no easy choices when districts face budgetary challenges. But please don't choose cuts that significantly & disproportionately impact the district's most vulnerable students.
I live in Chicago but just moved from Brookline. My son had an IEP so we understand how desperate funding for special education services is for all the vulnerable children of Brookline. Removing this funding source would be beyond a disservice. It would be harmful.
IEPs, 504s, the learning centers and all our special education teachers and staff are critical to our children's education, confidence, growth and future. For my family, I saw the full benefits of the learning center. Cutting learning center means cutting the necessary learning and support for our children to grow and adjust as needed and to gain confidence in how they need to move forward and take the next steps. I witnessed first hand how incredible our learning centers are for our kids. My son is now an honors and AP student at BHS. Without all that support, care, and guidance from all his team of teachers to address his learning needs, I don't know where we'd be now.
Everyone deserves respect and dignity. The transgendered community is seen and loved and uplifted in Brookline. Why not support them in leading a life that truly expresses who they are and let's them be free and share their joy with the world. "Less Than 1% regret rate for transitioning"
