Locals should be able to access their local beach and not be priced out by
outrageous parking fees. People cannot afford to enjoy the public beaches because of greed and catering to tourists and the wealthy
Make the beach accessible again for the locals! My family has been going to and living near Wrightsville Beach for many many generations. Town of Wrightsville Beach is making it harder and harder for area locals to enjoy our beloved beach and making it an exclusive beach for those that can afford it.
Wrightsville Beach is the defacto beach of a large part of the Wilmington area. Given that beaches in North Carolina have long been legally recognized as public spaces, there should be a careful effort to strike a balance between the interests of the beach town (such as WB) and the wider public. The recent fee and hour increases present a challenge to this balance. I believe these changes will impact locals the most; weekend travelers will likely keep coming because they don’t have to pay the high fee as much, but forbiddingly high parking fees will serve to keep out “the poors” from coming too often or too early. Not charging for parking after 5pm would serve to even the balance somewhat, especially for residents of the surrounding area who view the beach as an otherwise accessible place staple of local recreation.
As permanent residents of Wilmington North Carolina we love our beautiful beaches and love supporting our local community and businesses. With rising prices everywhere it was a nice little break to be able to visit our beach after hours and relax for awhile. A lot of Families and senior citizens will not be able to have that simple pleasure. In the world today we all need something to look forward to.. stop the greed and let the middle class enjoy life too! Everything is not about money
Wrightsville Beach has written their legacy as being the greedy example for other beach towns to follow. Charging parking fees to visit a public place should be illegal. I remember when parking was a dollar an hour and $10 for a day pass, still thought that was ridiculous. Restore free hours and stop lining your pockets with the public’s hard earned money. It will only get worse people, how long til it’s $10 an hour? Or is there a limit to their greed where people will be fed up and stop visiting. Maybe that’s what they want
I’ve watched beach parking prices rise over the last few years since living close to Wrightsville Beach. It would be so nice to take my 3 y.o. to the beach during non-peak hours (after 5) when most people are heading to dinner. As a local, I want to support the beach and small businesses in the area, but with price hikes it’s becoming far more difficult to go to the beach during the warmer months. It would be nice to be able to live here AND enjoy all the amenities of living here in Wilmington.
I moved to Wilmington for the beautiful beach. I am very disappointed that the cost to enjoy it is keeping me from going. After working a long day caring for our senior population a short trip to the beach would be so relaxing but I can’t afford to pay these parking fees. I now depend on my children to take me to Fort Fisher occasionally on weekends. It really is sad and effecting my mental health as well. A half hour at the beach can do amazing things for the mind.
I've heard so many arguments about the price of parking being meant to deter tourist. That's a cop out. Higher prices for parking deters New Hanover County residents who can't afford to pay $5 an hour for a beach day. As a former teacher, it was deviating to not be able to afford beach days during the summer with my son-something that should be an easily accessible activity for us as we live 10 minutes away. But nope. Once every two weeks was what we could do on my salary... that's disgusting. Our children deserve access to the beach. Teenagers and college students deserve access to something free and natural to do after school. I'll stop ranting but again, I love this so much and am happy to see people taking action! Way to at least SPEAK UP!
Talking to many people during this off-season, I have heard of many not wishing to go to Wrightsville beach due to the fact that they increased the cost of parking compared to other beach towns that are close by and charge WAY less for a full day or even a few hours. My question is, what does the money for all the parking go too? I know there is obviously maintenance and upkeep up the island. But what could they possibly need that institutes the raising of the cost of parking? I know for myself I love to fishing on JMP but seeing how much parking costs, really makes me want to visit the island less, and especially since the cost is high and there is an extremely low amount of parking available.
Allow the citizens of these counties to help craft creative solutions to this issue. Could it be a parking pass? Resident only spaces? I don’t know but it is so hard to not be able to go to the beach just because I can’t afford it. It’s not right for the people who live here.
