It was the outstanding reputation and commitment of the Architecture at the University of Plymouth, especially the guidance and international perspective of my supervisors that inspired me to choose Plymouth for my doctoral studies. Their mentorship has been the foundation of my academic here. If they are forced to leave, I honestly do not know how I would continue or where I would turn. The loss of such dedicated and experienced supervisors would not only jeopardize my own research progress but also shake the very reason I came to this university.

My daughter's dream was to live and study abroad, and she chose Plymouth for her arts degree and found a place there. How can she finish her degree if the courses she needs don't exist anymore?! Do you know what a hardship it is for international students to get there in the first place, and now she may have to switch schools? The world needs art and artists more than ever now.

I got to know many members of staff in the arts when I was a postdoc in social sciences at Plymouth. I was horrified to learn of the planned programme closures. One of Plymouth’s greatest assets as a city is its concentration of artists and performers. Staff in the arts at the University of Plymouth are a huge part of what makes the Plymouth special, bringing vitality to a place that has a lot of economic and social challenges. Plymouth University staff are at the core of the city's LGBT programming and its independent theatre scene, and a University of Plymouth staff member was recently the city's poet laureate. Redundancies and closed arts programmes are a disaster for both staff, whose lives are being turned upside-down, and for the students who come to the University of Plymouth for its excellent arts education. But it’s no understatement to say that this is also a disaster for Plymouth as a whole, not only because of the economic effects of job losses and reduced student numbers, but also because of losing a cultural anchor that contributes so much to the life of the city.

The arts scene in Plymouth has grown significantly during the past decade, and UoP has contributed to this explosion of culture through its various courses. Doing away with these course - and disinvesting from the arts having spent so much money not only on course, but on facilities such as The House and Levinsky Gallery - is a false economy and is extremely short-sighted.

As someone who's worked for years to bring arts and humanities programming to engineering and technical students, I have seen the difference that this perspective makes in a largely STEM education. No administration should be managing budgets with short-sighted cuts that reduce student access to arts and humanities courses or experiences. To quote one of my recent students, an engineer, "the one thing I refuse to give up in a dire time like this is my humanity. Why do we have to take arts as STEM majors? Because your humanity doesn’t end as soon as you enter the workforce”.

The Eastgate theatre is a much used and much loved local resource that provides a variety of opportunities for the local community, often dependent on volunteers. They're putting a lot of effort into exploring all income streams and for Scottish Borders council to pull the plug on the funding at short notice is disgusting. The Eastgate supports the community in so many ways and to lose this resource would have an impact on the local economy.

EastGate art centre and theatre is a place, a hub for isolated folks to get out, escape TV, loneliness, meet and share, our rich local culture and insightful learning...enlightenment and knowledge. A lot of ‘The arts‘ Help us engage and formulate and ask questions, We become more informed... To learn and discover from our history, and workshops to learn how to tell our narratives. By cutting funding the arts will be made inaccessible for many people, young and old. Please keep it funded, keep it open, and accessible, not funding it is a false economy.

The Eastgate Theatre is a hugely important community resource for Peebles and surrounding area. All aspects of the Arts have a measurable positive impact on wellbeing. In addition the Theatre helps reduce social isolation. The loss of the Theatre would have a significant impact on individuals and the cost to health and care services would be far more than it costs to run the resource. Scottish Borders Council and Live Borders (who in reality are part of SBC) must listen to the community and ensure this valuable resource is properly funded.

Whilst Ukrainian artists, sportsman, ballet dancers, opera singers… are being killed by Russia, Netrebko is offered one of the best world stages to perform. There is plenty of evidence that she supports Putin and his regime. She may have said that she is against the war, the phrase widely adopted by many Russians, but is she of an opinion that Russia is an aggressor that had been terrorising and murdering innocent Ukrainian citizens. The country that torches, rapes, bombs and tries to erase another culture should not be given a stage to show case it’s “culture”.
