As a leader in public health education, Gillings must be willing to take a stand against the harmful erasure of equity in educational spaces. No conversation about public health is complete without considering EQUITY. Students of the School at minimum deserve transparency of what happened and what will happen to them in their future studies.

I was admitted into this concentration for 25-26, and was extremely disappointed to see UNC fold to outside pressures purely because of perceived buzzwords. It's disheartening to see public health leaders so easily cast aside an important tenet of human health, especially given that the overall goal of public health practice should be to promote and work towards health equity for all. This decision is shameful, and rest assured I will be attending another school.

Let us not forget our past and how hard our ancestors fought for their rights; four our rights. “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere” - MLK Jr.

I enrolled at UNC specifically to attend the Health Equity MPH program, and would have gone to graduate school elsewhere if the Health Equity program had not been available. I currently serve as a program manager overseeing health equity and social justice program evaluation in a state government agency. I apply what I learned from Gilling's Health Equity MPH program to my work on a daily basis. I am incredibly disheartened to hear that UNC leadership is no longer interested in investing in these topics or in young professionals who want to learn how to best serve their communities. I encourage the university to reconsider their decision.

Equity and justice are the core of public health, because all our health is intertwined. It is imperative that we continue making space for this work in the curriculum, and positioning it with the same importance and respect given to epidemiology, health behavior, and the other branches of public health.

The Health Equity concentration was the key factor in my decision to pursue my graduate studies at UNC. While considering other schools, this concentration made Gillings stand out. To have it removed not only sends a troubling message to prospective students but also devalues the aspirations of current students.

The vulnerable populations that we in public health serve deserve better than rolling over to a lawless administration who is actively harming minoritized and vulnerable people. Cutting this program won’t save you. The only real option is to fight back. Stand for your values and principles Otherwise Public Health is nothing more than cover for the rich and powerful and no minoritized students or populations should trust us.

UNC and Gillings has struggled with true diversity, equity, and inclusion for decades. The principles they teach often don't penetrative their administration and operations. This is another step in the wrong direction to eliminate an academic concentration in health equity, social justice, and human rights. Students and some faculty have been sounding their alarm for UNC and Gillings to live up to their mission and values not to mention evidence based practices of excellence for people of all backgrounds and identities. These administrations, Dean's, Chairs, and some faculty have continued to protect the status quo and maintain structures meant to value and promote those who preserve white privilege, institutional racism, capitalism, ableism, and patriarchy. This is another example of their willingness to bend the knee to those same principles as our nation devolves into an Oligarchy. I doubt this petition will change their mind, just as they weren't moved or deterred when students objected to them eliminating the course on Health Disparities in the US over 10 years ago. Because I managed to graduate and thus benefit from the name of this institution that so many organizations and institutions admire, I will speak Up AGAIN for a better UNC and Gillings. I will sign this petition as documentation of my dissent and resistance to oppression and injustice. I will make this comment hoping it might resonate with someone with power, influence, and integrity to do what is right and best for the people of NC and the Global society they claim to serve.

Health equity isn’t just a concept—it’s a necessity. As an incoming PharmD student with plans to pursue an MPH, I chose UNC for its commitment to addressing systemic health disparities. When UNC Gillings announced the removal of the Health Equity, Social Justice, and Human Rights concentration, I was deeply disappointed. But advocacy works! Because we spoke up, UNC reversed its decision. This victory reaffirms that our voices matter and that health equity must remain a priority. Let’s keep pushing for change! #HealthEquityMatters #KeepHESJHR #AdvocacyWorks

Incredibly disappointed in this decision. Yet another decision by this University that causes this alumnae to struggle with having the same pride I once did saying I'm a Tarheel tried and true.
