Oxford High School Shooting - Introduce Safe Storage Law For Guns In Michigan

Oxford High School Shooting! "Michigan's laws are woefully inadequate. We don't have a safe storage law. We’re not legally required to store your weapon in a safe manner." Karen McDonald, Michigan Prosecutor  With this petition, we want to introduce the law in Michigan for safe storage of guns. That's it! This petition is NOT about politics! It is about common sense and about safety of our children. With your help we can change the law in Michigan!   Background: Oxford High School Shooting is a tragedy! I’m numb! I’m devastated, shocked and shattered as an adult to see our children going through these tragedies. We as the People; we as the American society, must create the culture that changes our laws and prevent gun violence once for all! We must continue promoting human values that honor life, respect for each other, promote kindness and caring for each other.  Most importantly, we must make laws that prevent tragedies like this. According to Sandyhook Promise website (https://www.sandyhookpromise.org/gun-violence/16-facts-about-gun-violence-and-school-shootings/ gun violence and school shootings are a uniquely American epidemic. “EACH DAY 8 children die from gun violence in America. Another 32 are shot and injured”. (More data from CDC: https://www.cdc.gov/injury/wisqars/index.html “An estimated 4.6 million American children live in a home where at least one gun is kept loaded and unlocked.” EVERY week we have at least one shooting on our school grounds! No children nor parents in any of the other industrial countries have to deal with this level of fear; fear of school shootings, as we do in America. Let us to STAND UP as parents and lead the change in our laws that prevent death and injuries of our children. Please let us not to hide behind archaic explanations and look at the facts and numbers. This is AMERICA and still, our children are 100s of times more at risk to get killed and injured by gun violence at their schools compared to other nations. This must STOP and we can do this together. SIGN THIS PETITION! We are Oxford Strong! THE HILL reported on 12/03/21 02:41 PM: [Oakland County prosecutor Karen McDonald was asked during a news conference on Friday (Dec/3/2021) what Michigan’s laws were regarding bringing a child to a firing range and practicing with them.“Good question. Michigan's laws are woefully inadequate. We don't have a safe storage law. We’re not legally required to store your weapon in a safe manner. Children are allowed to attend with their parents so long as their parent is present. So the answer to that question is we don't have strong enough laws,” the Michigan prosecutor answered. McDonald emphasized during the news conference that she was not against people owning guns, saying that she knew a lot of people who responsibly owned guns. At the same time she noted that "it's your responsibility — it's your duty — to make sure that you don't give access to this deadly weapon to somebody that you have reason to believe is going to harm someone."] Video: Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald joins Devin Scillian on Flashpoint to discuss the latest details in the tragic Oxford High School shooting. https://www.clickondetroit.com/video/flashpoint/2021/12/05/flashpoint-interview-prosecutor-karen-mcdonald-talks-latest-on-oxford-high-school-shooting/

#StopGunsAtTheDoor: Require Metal Detectors at All Public K-12 Schools

Metal detectors and secured points of entry are needed in each public school immediately. It is beyond time to do something. We must intercept weapons before they enter our campuses or lives will continue to be at risk. In the very least, our children, teachers, and staff deserve a safe environment to learn and work in. Since the Columbine shooting in 1999, there have been 157 children, educators and other people that have been killed in assaults at schools, and another 351 have been injured. The most recent tragedy at Oxford High School in Michigan claimed 4 innocent lives and left 7 injured. Enough is enough. We must call our public officials into action. We cannot wait for another tragedy to occur. Metal detectors would have thwarted most of the incidents at schools — including the incident at Oxford High. For all of the naysayers who say metal detectors at entry points “don’t work,” I encourage those same people to consider stripping metal detectors from airports, courthouses, government buildings, theme parks, etc. The metal detectors are in those places for a reason — because they work, because they ensure safety. Yes, there will still continue to be incidents outside of secured places, but minds can be more at ease while inside. Metal detectors are not a cure-all solution — they are a starting point. I ask government officials — would you feel safe at work and be able to focus at your job if metal detectors were taken out of your building? Would you feel safe at the airport without the metal detectors? Or would you be on alert? Is this fear-driven environment what you want our children and teachers subjected to? Why are we having schools run “active shooter drills” (traumatizing in itself as it acknowledges a very real threat) instead of preventing the guns from entering the building to begin with? I reiterate, metal detectors and secured points of entry are needed in each K-12 public school immediately. We must act swiftly before another tragedy occurs.

Prevent Violence in US Public Schools: Require Mindfulness And Coping Skills Education

Please sign this petition to REQUIRE MINDFULNESS and COPING SKILLS EDUCATION for all public schools. I am advocating for the mental health of the student to be considered just as important as learning literature or science or any other class provided by public education. My name is Rebecca Prete. I am a mother of four children, a wife, and a yoga teacher. I am so sad about all of the student’s lives that have been lost because of school shootings in our country. When Columbine massacre happened, I was a child and it was a complete shock to me. I am so sick and scared that this has become normal for our society now. I fear for my children and this keeps me up at night. Why do these kids feel so bad to want to kill their peers? It’s more than the guns or no guns argument…it’s about the lost soul behind the gun that needs to be healed so they do not kill others. This is an epidemic and it has to be taken just as seriously as the coronavirus.  Nothing has changed and I can’t keep burying my head in the sand thinking this will just go away on it’s own and that this is just a phase that we will all grow out of.  This all keeps me up at night and I fear for my children’s lives. I tell myself that maybe it’s an irrational fear, but the number of shootings is so substantial that it sadly is not. Part of the mindfulness education could include meeting on a weekly basis where students sit in a circle with their peers and check-in about how they are feeling and also get a chance to get to know each other on a deeper level. Mindfulness techniques such as meditation and breathing exercises can be explored. This education should be as important as science class or any other class our budget covers because it is education for the student’s emotional/social growth and development which is vital for a child’s mental health and well-being.  This education can help to create a community-feel and also help the students empathize and be compassionate towards each other. Studies have shown that group therapy is the most effective form of therapy; thus, there can be facilitated groups on important emotional issues they are experiencing collectively. Maybe, over time, this will help with the bullying problem and at the very least help each other be more kind and loving and less likely to go kill their peers. This also has potential to help with addiction problems, depression, anxiety, and other difficult issues that students may experience. So much of communication is now done through social media and it should be our duty to help our children disconnect from their phones, connect with their peers, and to love and respect their community and themselves. Thank you for your consideration.  Sincerely, Rebecca Prete
