Change the National Building Code to make housing accessible for all Australians

Right now, nearly three quarters of Australians with mobility impairment live in housing which does not meet their needs. Many people with disability say poor housing design means they cannot visit friends and family. In some cases, housing quality is so low that people are unable to leave the house at all. “We are no longer stuck in institutions, but we are stuck at home because of poor design” “My own sibling built a new home, and I cannot access it. She did not mean to exclude me - the builder just didn't know what to do to allow for my disability.” Australia’s lack of accessible housing is also forcing many older Australians into residential care, when the majority of Australians seniors would rather age at home. “I wouldn't be able to live in a home that was not accessible. I'd have to live in some kind of supported accommodation.” This has to change - it’s time to make housing accessible for all Australians. The Building Better Homes Campaign is a coalition of disability and seniors organisations working to change the National Building Code to make accessibility standards mandatory for all new residential homes. This will change the life of hundreds of thousands of Australians who are currently limited in their day to day activities simply because their housing doesn’t meet their needs. We know our campaign will be strongly opposed by many vested interests across the building industry - that’s why we need your help to win this campaign. We need your help to tell State and Federal Building Ministers that they must make accessibility standards mandatory for all new residential homes.  Please, sign and share this petition to show you support for people with disabilities, seniors, and those with mobility impairment.

Petition to Richard Colebeck

Mandate skilled aged care staff to resident ratios. Stop the neglect.

This is my darling mum, Phyllis, she had dementia and died in March 2012. Her aged care facility did not care about her.   Food is a very important part of care, and often the only thing residents have to look forward to, for many it's the focus of their day. The facility served food that she and others found unpalatable and inedible, cheap junk food, hot food often served cold AND badly cooked to boot!  At times she’d go without anything from midday till 8am the next day - that’s 20 hours without food. And she would have starved if I hadn’t intervened, Mum feared complaining because she’d be told off like a child and once was slapped by a staff member.  When I complained, the aged care facility threatened me with an intervention order and ten years jail for stalking. And when I spoke out about THAT, people got in touch sharing horror stories of neglect and abuse and thanked me for speaking out – the common thread was shortage of staff and inadequate basic care leading to neglect. Many of the elderly and their families won’t complain for fear of retribution. This is when I realised the lack of staff ratios was a huge problem. With no mandated staff / resident ratios in aged care facilities across Australia, our elders are at risk of abuse and neglect. What I see is a system that needs changing. Over-worked staff are stressed and undervalued. In many aged care homes, one staff member can care for 20 or more residents with residents waiting for long periods to receive the care they urgently need by overstretched carers and nurses who feel that they can never get the job done. Richard Colebeck, if you really care about elderly Australians mandate staff/resident ratios for all aged care facilities across Australia, to protect our elders, to keep them safe, respected and valued.

Pharma giant GSX: Make live-saving shingles vaccine Shingrix available in Australia

Shingles is a viral infection that causes a painful blistering rash that can last for months and usually affects older people, especially those with weakened immune systems. I’m an immuno-compromised cancer patient and I’m at high risk of getting shingles. The pharmaceutical giant, GSK (Glaxo Smith Kline) is refusing to make the vaccine for small markets like Australia where their profit margin is low. I’m calling on the global pharmaceutical company to make Shingrix, the hugely effective shingles vaccine available to Australians now. The company has a duty to make at least a small number of vaccine doses available to those most at risk, in all countries. Currently, we have the Zostavax vaccine available which is only 51% effective in preventing the disease in my age group, as opposed to Shingrix, which has a 90% protection rate. Only recently, an immuno-compromised person died after receiving the Zostavac vaccine. I am afraid for my health and possibly my life but I shouldn’t be - GSK must make the vaccine available here. Shingrix was already approved for PBS in Australia last year. GSK claims to not have enough supply of the vaccine to meet the global demand. It appears they have made a comfortable commercial decision to supply countries like the USA where profit margins are high. It’s unfair for people like me to be missing out on this life-saving vaccine. Please sign and share the petition calling on GSK to distribute the Shingrix vaccine more equitably across the world.
