Harassment, persecution and institutional/structural violence, ONCE AGAIN at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Uruguay – “Facultad de Veterinaria/Universidad de la República de Uruguay”. I am the victim this time. My name is Carmen Silvia Gallo-Muniz, Associate Professor, Head of the English Area (Teacher, Translator, Peer Reviewer). I applied for the position and started working in 2009.  Since 2010 I have repeatedly denounced being a victim of Harassment by a veterinarian, and a member of the Board of that Faculty. Physicians and members of the medical staff at the University Health Department have reported once and again I had experienced harassment at work, how this issue has subsequently and seriously hampered my role and its negative effects on my health since I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia at the Hospital de Clínicas (University Hospital) ER in 2006. I have filed my claims before: the Faculty Deans and the Commission for Gender and Equity; the University Health Department and the Commission for the Prevention of Psychological and Sexual Harassment (which has not worked in months); and also before domestic and international organizations protecting the rights of women in terms of gender equality and freedom from violence of any kind.  The Faculty and University authorities have remained blind, deaf and mute, they have ignored the claims I had filed. They have lost my claims more than once on purpose, or my files have so far not been reported. I have been called “crazy”, to my social and professional discredit and because being a woman I have courage enough to file my claims. Under the circumstances the University Health Department considered I was eligible for a medical leave, and though I have asked doctors to release me to return to work, none of the University nor the Faculty authorities guarantee to set me free from the stalker.  Tired of the authorities at the Faculty and at the University’s complicit silence on August 5th, 2016 I submitted my claim before Inspectorate of Work and Social Security/Labour Ministry and once the University and the Faculty were notified, the Faculty Board fired me as a retaliatory measure by issuing a Resolution dated September 16th, 2016. The stalker is still working and he is still a member of the Faculty Board, with the complicity of the Faculty and the University authorities. While political leaders of the government, of all parties, preach against violence towards women, rending their robes and crying out loud “Not one less”, a woman, who is the victim, a hardworking University Professor fit to work, is punished and got fired, and the stalker, who is a member of the Faculty Board is protected and is still working. I carry out this signature collection campaign, so that everybody gets to know that gender violence, harassment, institutional/structure violence happen at the University in Uruguay, in the academic area and that we, women, are not defended in the correct way, on the contrary we are re-victimized, and we are also fired in an attempt to silence us and our complaints. I am asking for your signature so the authorities investigate my claims, and the truth comes out, for the stalker and his accomplices are punished, and they give me back not only my job,  because it was my only source of income and I take care of my mother, an 86 years old Senior woman. That I will also be compensated for damages in my dignity and honor and my professional performance. I also collect signatures, so that the corresponding authorities, at the University, the Faculty and the Government of Uruguay, leave aside their deafness, blindness and indifference and regardless of the political ideology they support me for justice. I appreciate your help and thank you for your signature and support.

Petition to Addressed to President of the Supreme Court of Spain Carlos Lesmes

SPAIN MUST REOPEN CASE FOR RAPE VICTIM

Remember my story? I will remember something that weighs heavily on me, even if the time has passed to be exact 9 years ... I am still here, living or surviving, wanting justice to be interested in my case. I do not even know how I am alive after everything I went through and the suffering of my family. I was raped just after I was 20 years old. Full of illusions that cleared in a matter of seconds. I was still a virgin, yes, it ist possible to be with 20 years just fulfilled, and with more. I always thought that my first time would be with someone special, a love that could show me as I am, teach my naked soul, my essence, because we all know that the first time is something new and a unique feeling. This time was for me a nightmare, with (I do not know how to describe it) a kind of NOT PERSON who is supposed to be prince, but not my dreams, but my nightmares. He is the prince of Saudi Arabia, the one that leaves in planes lined of gold ... the decadence of the morality. They wove a spider web one known, girlfriends thought, but called "princesses". They took me to a disco. I was drugged. I was transferred to a yacht. I've been raped. They threatened me after they raped. And yes, I am still alive, others have passed the same and are dead. Sometimes I wonder how I came out alive, but I can only say that living with it every day and the damage it has done to me is irreparable. Neither psychologists, nor painkillers, when the symptoms of dreaded anxiety appear, how can I explain to my family everything that goes through my mind? That damage I can not explain, but I do cry and want to forget it. How can I explain to my friends that I am sad when in truth, I am torn to pieces ...? Not an afternoon of laughter can fix the damage I feel inside me! Easy is to judge me, as many have done without knowing everything I've been through and living with it, what has happened and what happens to my family. No one has the right to judge me, but I have the right to be tried by justice. I continue here because despite all the sadness that I carry inside, I do not lose hope that someday, that NO PERSON will get what he deserved, and do not rape anyone else. He's still free since then, we talk about years from that and surely there will be more girls who have gone through my experience, terrible and disgusting experience. I am still alive but not silent, I am still here with more force than ever and I will wait for JUSTICE to be done! To all those who think that we had the luck of having the King of Spain (emeritus today) you are wrong, was the first to worry about closing my case. The case is again closed thanks to judges who are supposed to "watch" for justice in Spain. I appeal to you to help me reopen my case.

We want the Oscar Academy to condemn violence against women in Film and Bertolucci

ES / DE My name is Sandra, I am a film lover and a woman. Although until today I have not seen, and am not planning to see, The Last Tango in Paris (Bernardo Bertolucci, 1972), I, like thousands of people, know the story of its protagonists. I am talking about Bertolucci as an acclaimed director and Marlon Brando as a renowned actor and sex symbol. About Maria Schneider, "the girl" in the film, I know little. Mainly that her popularity skyrocketed thanks to this film, and it dropped as intensely afterwards; and that she spent the rest of her life regretting the infamous "butter scene", in which the director and the main male character decided to hide details of her on-screen sodomization until the day of filming. To those who do not know the shocking story, Brando and Bertolucci were both authors and accomplices in an act of supposed eroticism, key in the film, in which Brando's character uses butter as a lubricant before anally raping Schneider's character. As Bertolucci wanted a "realistic" reaction, they surprised the nineteen-year-old girl, with an improvised and not-agreed upon script, and we can see her tears of horrendous surprise in the film. Bertolucci and Brando violated Maria Schneider's rights as an actress, her dignity as a woman and a person, and humiliated and psychologically abused her. Whether she was penetrated or not is almost anecdotal.  The facts I am referring to should have more consequences than a simple controversy in the world I hope to live in in the 21st century. Not only are these events verified (they have been acknowledged by the actress and the director himself) but Bertolucci has even openly spoken about the topic and admitted to feeling "guilt but not regret", in a TV interview from 2013. In the three years since this shocking declaration, the impact has been close to zero. I myself only found out about this on November 25th 2016, on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women during which the subtitled version of this interview was released.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=021jNOEVytQ  Bertolucci is not the first in a long series of "artists" throughout Art History who believe that the end justifies the means and that women are tools in the same way a brush or a camera is. But I strongly believe that having made it to the 21st century and witnessing a very necessary feminist wave, it is time for institutions and the media to take some responsibility for the way we portray and treat women. Art cannot define itself at any cost; it cannot jeopardize people's integrity or women's integrity.  We often hear about empowerment, rights, equal opportunities and about sentencing gender violence. You, the Academy, have even approved a new measure this year, according to which from now to 2020 the number of female members will be doubled, in order to guarantee impartiality and equal representation of men and women.  I demand that you, as CEO of the Academy and as a woman, speak up for women whose suffering, like Maria Schneider's, is forgotten. To be consistent and condemn this unjust practice. Maria Schneider suffered from violence in the flesh, in a time when nobody would have supported her testimony; she never took action other than against herself and her own integrity. It is not too late, now that any statute of limitations on these crimes have passed, to nevertheless make a meaningful gesture that corresponds to the renewed and modernized Academy you want to represent.  I ask you, on the upcoming 89th edition of the Oscar ceremony, to dedicate a special section to taking a stance on violence to women, stating that the Academy cannot support or award such conduct, and that it outright condemns it. I further demand that you release an ethics guide for the film industry, set out from a gender perspective, which you will write with the help of leading organizations for the development of policies for gender equality. Sincerely, Sandra Sánchez

Petition to Dawn Hudson
