Suspend fuel tax in Maryland to support struggling residents

Suspend fuel tax in Maryland to support struggling residents
The Issue

Maryland residents are facing increasing financial pressure from rising costs of living, including housing, groceries, utilities, and transportation. At a time when many families are struggling to make ends meet, the burden of Maryland’s 46-cent per gallon fuel tax along with gasoline prices over $4 per gallon, and diesel over $5 per gallon it is placing additional strain on everyday commuters, working families, and small businesses.
For many Marylanders—especially those in rural and semi-rural communities—driving is not optional. It is essential for getting to work, accessing healthcare, and supporting their families. The current fuel tax disproportionately impacts these individuals who have no alternative transportation options.
We respectfully call on Governor Wes Moore and Maryland state leadership to take immediate action by:
-Temporarily suspending the 46¢ per gallon fuel tax
-Providing short-term financial relief to residents during ongoing economic hardship
-Evaluating long-term strategies that balance infrastructure funding with affordability for Maryland families.
This is not a partisan issue—it is about providing practical, immediate relief to the people who keep Maryland running every day.
Marylanders deserve policies that recognize the real financial challenges they are facing right now.
We urge swift action.
Marylanders are being squeezed from every direction—higher registration fees, rising everyday costs, and now one of the highest gas taxes in the region.
The 46¢ per gallon fuel tax is no longer reasonable under current economic conditions. It is a direct hit to working-class residents who rely on their vehicles to survive.
Leadership should not ignore the financial reality on the ground. Temporary relief is not radical—it is responsible.
