The Issue

Wren was not purchased to sit on a couch. She is a working Samoyed. She was raised, trained, and conditioned to do a job, and her coat is not simply cosmetic. It is part of how she functions as a working dog in New Hampshire’s changing weather conditions. After a routine grooming appointment, a significant portion of Wren’s coat was shaved without our consent. We were never asked for permission. We were never presented with alternatives. We were never given the opportunity to discuss the risks of shaving her coat so that we could make an informed decision.

Double-coated dogs like Wren play vital roles in various environments, acting as working dogs in diverse climates. Their coats are essential for their health and well-being, providing insulation against both cold and heat. Shaving these coats without medical necessity can lead to serious health issues, including overheating, sunburn, and permanent damage to the coat’s ability to function effectively.

This issue is not unique to us. Countless pet owners across the country face similar situations where their double-coated dogs are shaved without consent, based on misguided grooming practices. This lack of informed grooming can compromise a dog’s health and ability to perform its duties, particularly for working breeds.

We propose that legislation be introduced to protect these animals by ensuring that double-coated dogs are not shaved unless a licensed veterinarian deems it medically necessary. Groomers should otherwise be required to provide thorough information on the implications of shaving such coats and seek explicit consent from dog owners.

This petition aims to raise awareness among dog owners, groomers, and lawmakers about the vital importance of protecting the integrity of double-coated dog breeds. By advocating for informed grooming practices, we can ensure the health, comfort, and functionality of these important animals.

Sign this petition to call for the protection and well-being of double-coated dogs nationwide. Together, we can make a difference and prevent unnecessary harm to our beloved companions.
