Protect the Abortion Rights Missourians Voted For

The Issue

In November of 2024, 1,538,659 Missourians voted “yes” on Amendment 3. Amendment 3 protected Missourians’ rights to reproductive freedom, specifically including access to abortion. This was enough votes to PASS Amendment 3 in the State of Missouri. After many attempts from law makers to keep Amendment 3 off the ballot, it finally passed. Since it was an amendment to the Missouri Constitution, multiple previous restrictions on abortion were deemed unconstitutional by Judge Jerri Zhang.

However, Missouri legislators refuse to accept the vote of Missourians. One attempt to block abortion access in Missouri is Missouri SJR 8. Missouri SJR 8 states “This constitutional amendment, if approved by the voters, modifies the equal protection provision of the Missouri Constitution to define ‘person’ as every human being with a unique DNA code regardless of age, including an unborn child. Nothing in the Constitution shall be construed to secure or protect a right to abortion or the funding of an abortion”. Missouri SJR 8 also states “This constitutional amendment, if adopted by the voters, prohibits the General Assembly from appropriating or otherwise authorizing funds for any clinic, physician's office, or any other place or facility in which abortions are performed or induced or any affiliate or associate of such entity. This provision shall not apply to any hospital.”

Missouri lawmakers are deliberately trying to suppress and ignore the votes of 1.5 million Missourians. This is unacceptable behavior. Missouri SJR 8 was voted “Do Pass” by the Families, Seniors, and Health Committee on March 5, 2025. This joint resolution is now progressing in the Missouri Legislature and needs to be stopped. Law makers need to accept the vote of Missourians. The joint resolution makes no mention of exemptions for rape, incest, or danger to the pregnant person. Additionally, this joint resolution doesn’t state that Missouri General Assembly funds can’t be used for abortions; rather, all funding must be voided for any institution that provides or induces abortions (exempting hospitals).

Our healthcare rights are under attack. We cannot allow law makers to usurp the constituent’s votes. This is both a voting rights issue as well as a bodily autonomy one.

This bill is sponsored by Senator Mike Moon (573) 751-1480.

Please call and email your senators and representatives. Please share as much as you can. We need to show them that Missourians won’t stand for this.
