PROTECT THE BLVD FAMILIES

The Issue

In 2021, Stamford voters were promised a city where affordable housing would be protected, expanded, and championed. Mayor Caroline Simmons ran on that promise — and many of us believed her.

But today, the residents of 1201 Washington Boulevard — longtime teachers, seniors, healthcare workers, and families — are being displaced to make room for a private lease deal with UConn Stamford.

The City has had every opportunity to act. We submitted a clear, fair proposal asking for basic protections — a freeze on BMR eligibility, a right to remain until real housing alternatives are available, and simple, written landlord references to protect our future.

Instead, UConn, developers, and city officials are moving forward while residents are left scrambling for answers.

We are the people who held on through COVID, through rent hikes, through economic instability. We are the families that made Stamford a place worth investing in. And now, we are being quietly pushed aside — told that private contracts matter more than public promises.

Affordable housing is not just a campaign slogan. It’s a lifeline. And the credibility of Stamford’s leadership depends on how they treat the people who stayed, invested, and built this community.

We demand that Mayor Simmons, the Board of Representatives, UConn Stamford, and all stakeholders immediately adopt the BMR Tenant Protection Proposal submitted by residents of The Blvd.

Our asks are clear:

✅ Freeze BMR eligibility for displaced residents.

✅ Provide satisfactory landlord references to displaced households.

✅ Allow residents to remain at The Blvd until 74 Broad is available.

✅ Guarantee choice and dignity in relocation without eligibility loss.

Stamford’s future depends on whether leadership values people over profits.

Mayor Simmons: Keep the promise.

City leadership: Protect your residents.

Sign the petition. Demand action now.

The fight for affordable housing in Stamford is happening right now at 1201 Washington Boulevard — and we need you to stand with us.

Remember: It’s US today it could be YOU tomorrow!
