Urge the Obamas to Build a Nuclear-Free Future for Our Children NOW

Nuclear power is dirty, dangerous, and expensive – a point made clear by the tragedy unfolding at Japan’s crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant. The heavily damaged nuclear reactors are spreading radioactive waste into the environment. Contamination released in Japan will likely travel all over the world.  Nuclear power is the only source of energy that poses the risk of an accident that could contaminate the lands we leave our children for hundreds of thousands of years.  Nuclear reactors in the U.S. are just as vulnerable to natural disasters, mechanical failures, human errors, and loss of critical electric power supplies. More than 108 million Americans live within 50 miles of a nuclear reactor in the United States. Children are especially vulnerable to the effects of radiation. With Japan’s nuclear tragedy fresh in our collective conscience, now is the time for President Obama to make the bold and necessary move away from dangerous nuclear energy.  President Obama has stood up for renewable energy. First Lady, Michelle Obama, has made children’s health her signature cause. Let’s urge them, as both leaders and parents, to help ensure a healthier future for kids by advocating for energy from clean, renewable sources. Our children -- and grandchildren – could look back on our generation as the one that started a real Renaissance in renewable energy that could meet much of the nation's energy needs. Renewable and energy efficient technologies can help restore political and economic stability, create jobs and save money…and the planet.

Sooner or later, nuclear reactor accidents will happen. Whatever spin model is used to show them "safe" or "cost effective" will always be nullified with a single accident. In addition, whatever spin model is used to show them "safe" or "cost effective" will always be nullified by the fact that no one has still solved the problem of what to do with all the nuclear waste....which must be stored for millenia.

nuclear power is dangerous and creates waste that lasts thousands of years . I urge you to be a leader and not let your friendship with John Rogers Jr at Exelon Corp keep you from making America safer and cleaner, by urging solar and wind energy over nuclear and oil . You know it has to happen someday , may as well lead it now , and go down in the history books as your own man who made tough choices for the sake of future generations , rather than just continuing to ruin this world for our present convenience and for political fundraising favors.

In addition, transfer oil and gas and nuclear subsidies to solar, wind, and fuel cells, and require extra cement and steel containment of existing fuel cells and no polluting, no excuses!

Our nation should be mobilized like WWII to make and install solar on every home, wind and/or wave generators offshore. Two years should be enough to transition with a real commitment.

Considering human nature, and Murphy's law, it is obvious. Play with nuclear fire, get burned. Continue to play with nuclear fire, continue to get burned. Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, Fukushima where is the next inevitable accident. Just how much artificially introduced ionizing radiation do we dare release into the biosphere?

      Dear President Obama,

With so many safe, clean, alternative energy sources available to us, let's invest in them, not nuclear power. Every reactor in this country is an accident waiting to happen. Use the power of your office to incentivize renewable energy!
