The Issue

there are rumors going around stating that a partial demolition of the independence mall (kingston collection) will start in december of 2026… after colony place was built not even 2 miles down the street from the independence mall in 2006, and the mall was renamed in 2014, the mall has slowly gone downhill. in 2023, it was bought by a new management team. i really feel like once covid hit in 2020-21, it was a final “nail in the coffin” for this mall.

i love the small businesses in there today, and they deserve more recognition AND honesty about the FUTURE of this mall which the management has NOT been transparent about!! the sad reality is that malls need anchor stores to do well, and i have heard about future plans of adding in a costco to the old macys location in 2027. this would do WONDERS for the mall and would draw so much more foot traffic in which i thought would happen once the condos were built in 2021. from the center court down to the old sears location/old skyzone would be the section of this mall that would be demolished. everything from maziply toys down to the food court/movie theater would stay, target would be its own stand alone store, and outdoor storefronts would take place of the demolished section.

do we REALLY need more outdoor shopping plazas in new england? especially with colony place so close by and multiple other shopping plazas in plymouth/kingston already. i feel the mall should stay the way it is, and be bought out by new owners so it can be turned around. it has SO much potential, we really don’t have any other indoor shopping malls super close by other than the south shore plaza, in braintree which isn’t always the safest. the independence mall (kingston collection) is located in a decent area, has good security, and you feel safer walking around compared to other malls in the area. i see mall walkers frequently, moms with babies/young kids, and families who go here to stay out of the cold in the winter.  i have NEVER gotten the hype of outdoor shopping as someone who’s lived in massachusetts my entire life - it’s not enjoyable having to walk from store to store in the brutal temperatures, or drive from store to store to avoid being in the elements. it’s NOT convenient and can be extremely difficult for some people! i understand how much online shopping has took a toll on our malls, but mall management and ownership also has a HUGE part to play. notice how most of the other malls in this area are simon malls - and they all do significantly well, imagine if simon bought the kingston collection?

PLEASE take this into consideration and sign the petition to raise awareness. we all had so many memories as kids here, and we already lost the hanover mall - it would stink to see kingston go next ‼️
