Robyn Parker started this petition to Zoomed

Experienced chameleon are aware that ZooMeds chameleon "starter kit" is unsafe for chameleons and is a danger to new keepers and their chameleons.

They sell these kits under the guise that they're to be used for temporary housing. Even as a temporary housing they're unsuitable and have caused untold cases of Metabolic Bone Disease and ultimately, death in chameleons as they're missold in pet shops as a full set up suitable for the chameleons entire life span.

"Zoo Med quality Starter Kit for all Old World Chameleons. Great for Veiled Chameleons, Panther Chameleons, Jackson Chameleons, Parson’s Chameleons, and more!" No where in that description does it say that it's unsuitable for adults, it even claims you can keep Parsonii in there which is quite simply just ridiculous.

It's the responsibility to the company who make these kits to make sure they're suitable for the animal they're aimed towards.

I'm hoping with this petition that we can convince ZooMed to stop producing and recall these kits and revise something more suitable for the lifetime of chameleons. I also feel that it our responsibility as chameleon keepers to make a stand against misinformation and gear towards changes being made within the reptile sales trade and the entire reptile community.

I would like the community to work with ZooMed to create an all in one kit that can take new chameleon keepers and their chameleons from taking them home and throughout the entire lifetime of their chameleon.

Jennifer at ZooMed - "As I mentioned we have used these bulbs here with many of our hatchling chameleons as well as many other species that we have hatched"

"We do not recommend taking home a hatchling chameleon and putting them straight into an XL Reptibreeze where all of their resources are going to be spread out. We recommend our chameleon kit as a starter kit for smaller chameleons and hatchling as it allows the animals to be closer to the resources they need and makes it easier to heat and keep them warm. Once they are well established then yes moving them into a larger enclosure is always better."

As you can see a ZooMed representative admitted to me that it's for use for hatchlings only, retail stores shouldn't even be selling these kits as they don't (or definitely shouldn't) sell hatchlings.

It's their company, they need to educate their major retailers and the wider public.

It wouldn't be difficult for them to make up a kit suited to chameleons in the age range that their retailers sell and that's the angle I am going for with them via email right now.
