“ZIMBABWE FIRST”: A Petition for a Call for a National Conference Towards a NTA
“ZIMBABWE FIRST”: A Petition for a Call for a National Conference Towards a NTA
The Issue
Zimbabwe is a broken country—this is no longer a matter of debate. Every citizen, inside and outside our borders, knows it. The institutions that should lead us out of this crisis—the ruling party and the opposition—are themselves fractured and incapable of offering real solutions.
In 2016, the Platform for Concerned Citizens (PCC) proposed the establishment of a National Transitional Authority (NTA) to guide the country through a comprehensive transformation. Over the past nine years, this call has been echoed by many, and today, it is gaining renewed urgency and support.
We, a group of citizens, are now launching a renewed initiative—detailed in our Vision document—to convene a National Conference that will lay the foundation for a new political settlement in Zimbabwe.
This new political settlement will be brought about through a National Transitional Authority (NTA) implemented by respected, non-partisan and competent citizens, and will lead to uncontested elections accepted by all.
We believe the time for half-measures is over. Zimbabwe needs bold, inclusive, and lasting change. We must build a country where:
- Elections unite, not divide us
- Institutions serve the people, not the powerful
- The economy works for everyone, not just the elite
- Our children can dream and thrive at home
This is the Zimbabwe we deserve—and we can build it together.
This petition is a call for action. By signing, you are endorsing the urgent convening of a National Conference, leading to a citizen-driven Comprehensive Political Settlement, and the establishment of a National Transitional Authority (NTA).
The National Transitional Authority (NTA) should be a time-limited process of reform driven by non-partisan and respected citizens to achieve the following:
- Restoring Constitutional Governance: Ensuring strict adherence to our constitution and institutionalizing the principles of rule of law and constitutionalism.
- Reforming Key Institutions: Rebuilding the independence and professionalism of the judiciary, security services, electoral commission, and other vital institutions.
- Transforming the Electoral Framework: Creating conditions for genuinely free, fair, and uncontested elections that truly reflect the will of Zimbabweans.
- Stabilizing and Revitalizing the Economy: Implementing a comprehensive Economic Reform Agenda focused on:
- Resolving our crippling national debt and recovering misappropriated assets
- Establishing sound macroeconomic fundamentals
- Ensuring policy consistency to restore investor confidence
- Developing clear land policy and property rights frameworks
- Reviving productive sectors across the economy
- Mobilizing the skills, resources, and networks of our global diaspora
