Demand YouTube Shut Down Jim Nduruchi's Channel Exploiting Jigger Victims For Profit

The Issue

Jim Nduruchi, Director of Rise Up Society, is an organization in Kenya that travels to remote villages in order to film for YouTube the physical removal of Jiggers from the skin of victims suffering from Tungiasis. Tungiasis is a condition caused by the Chigoe flea, also known as Jiggers, which burrows beneath the skin of its victims causing severe pain and inflammation. The hands and feet of the person are most often affected, though other areas of the body can and are often times affected as well. While the World Health Organization considers the physical removal of these Jiggers as the preferred method of treatment, they insist that the jigger be removed whole and intact, by a health professional, under sterile conditions, followed by the application of a broad-spectrum antibiotic ointment, sterile dressings, and a Tetanus vaccine given. The jigger is to be removed whole and intact due to the flea's contents causing a severe inflammatory reaction.

Neither Mr. Nduruchi, nor his volunteer diggers, that he refers to as "Jigger Technicians", have any medical training whatsoever and have failed to provide proof of any such training, even after repeated attempts of obtaining this proof. Mr. Nduruchi has his untrained "Jigger Technicians" performing medically invasive procedures consisting of using donated scalpels to cut the jiggers out of these victims by slicing INTO the jigger, spilling its contents, and then the scraping away of this material on and into the open wounds left behind. The victim's affected areas (often feet) are not washed before or after they are cut into and are left open and bleeding after this procedure, with only hydrogen peroxide liberally sprayed onto the wounds. With no sterile dressings applied, their feet are left with open wounds and given only cheap sandals, or flip-flops, if any shoes at all. There is no antibacterial ointment applied or a Tetanus vaccine given. Only sometimes is a mild numbing gel, Lidocaine, applied before the procedure. There is no patient medical history gathered to assure that no victims with diabetes, bleeding disorders, or any other chronic health conditions are cut into, putting any number of them at risk for dangerous complications, not to mention the risk of deadly secondary infection or Tetanus. Mr. Nduruchi seeks out the most vulnerable citizens in Kenya with Jiggers for his videos...all poverty stricken, often children without their parents permission, or the elderly, who are led to believe that his group are medical professionals because of the fact that they allow themselves to be referred to as "Doctor" and by the white lab coats they wear.

Jim Nduruchi uses his YouTube videos to solicit donations from viewers, who he has told that 90% of their donations go directly to "digging Jiggers". Unfortunately, this seems to not be the case. All of the scalpels, gauze, peroxide, shoes and other materials used are donated from viewers, making their purchase by Jim unnecessary. Aside from Jim's YouTube earnings, which range from 6K-20K per month, there are large amounts of donated money that are unaccounted for, despite repeated requests for an accounting of this money and requests for receipts. Appx. $35,000 USD was collected by Jim for one victim's (By name of Orem) surgical procedure, of which appx. $30,000 is still unaccounted for. $1600 USD was collected for a "Dusk to Desk" program that seems to have been abandoned because no information can be found regarding it on their new website or through repeated requests. $8000 USD of the requested $50,000 USD has been collected for a "Jigger Hospital" that has yet to be built, though Jim is still asking for that full amount. $30,000 USD was confirmed By Mr. Nduruchi as collected for a "Jiggerist Kit" program. Only four, possibly five, Jiggerist Kits were given out, only to be taken back and the program discontinued very soon after. No accounting of what remained of the $30,000 USD collected has ever been provided. What happened to all of this money?

It strongly appears that Jim Nduruchi is using these victims for their YouTube video popularity and to profit financially from donations. Dangerous and irresponsible medical procedures are being performed on unwitting victims by people with no medical training and donations are solicited with zero transparency of their being used properly. By allowing Jim to post these videos, YouTube is facilitating the abuse and exploitation of these most vulnerable of Kenya's citizens. Please sign and demand YouTube shut down this channel!
