Stop AI Seatbelt Cameras from Violating Our Privacy — Suspend the Program Now
Petition Text:
The Queensland Government’s AI‑driven seatbelt camera program has crossed a line that no democratic nation should ever tolerate. These cameras are not just detecting seatbelts — they are photographing the private bodies of innocent people, including women and children, without consent, without warning, and without proper oversight.
The Queensland Audit Office has already confirmed that this program was launched without essential ethical checks, without a full privacy assessment, and without the safeguards required to protect the public. Despite this, the system continues to operate as if nothing is wrong.
These cameras capture far more than a seatbelt. They record the inside of vehicles from angles that expose thighs, underwear, chest areas, and other private regions — all while people are simply going about their day. Women adjusting clothing, children moving around, passengers wearing skirts or shorts — all of these moments are being photographed and stored by the government.
Even worse, these images are being reviewed by non‑police personnel, including private contractors. The public has no transparency about who these people are, what training they have, or what protections exist to stop misuse. No citizen should have to trust that unknown workers behind closed doors are behaving ethically with intimate images.
This is not road safety.
This is surveillance.
And it is a violation of basic human dignity.
We demand immediate action:
- Suspend the AI seatbelt camera program immediately.
- Conduct a full, independent investigation into privacy breaches and ethical failures.
- Restrict any future camera systems to upper‑body images only.
- Ensure that only sworn officers — not private contractors — review any images.
- Introduce strict laws preventing the capture of intimate areas under any circumstances.
Australians deserve safety on the roads — not government‑sanctioned exposure, humiliation, and non‑consensual photography. This program is an unacceptable invasion of privacy, and it must be stopped.
Sign this petition to demand accountability, transparency, and the protection of every
person’s right to privacy.
