Young Offenders Act for Better Victim Protection

The Issue

Personal experiences often inspire calls for change. This is one such case. I have seen, more times than I can count, serious violent crimes committed by young offenders in Regina and across Canada. These heart-wrenching experiences have not just taken a toll on me, but they have left indelible marks on many victims. From robberies to attempted murder and murder, the current law seems to be disproportionately protective of the offenders, often shielding them from the fair public scrutiny they deserve.

It's time to rebalance the scales of justice. The Young Offenders Act has remained untouched for too many years, while the number of crimes and victims continues to increase. According to Statistics Canada, Regina has seen a 10% increase in violent crime incidents over the past year, which is six times the national average (Statistics Canada, 2020).

We urgently request our lawmakers to take a closer look at the Young Offenders Act, and make necessary amendments or to rewrite it altogether. These changes should ensure more accountability for young offenders involved in serious crimes, and provide better recourse for victims. Moreover, transparency and justice demand that names should be printed for all serious crimes.

This petition is a plea for all victims who have been voiceless and defenseless for far too long. Now's the time to make that long overdue change. Victims need a voice, and it's time we take a stand to ensure they get it. Sign this petition and be part of this monumental change.
