The Issue

Upper Moreland Township is a remarkable community to raise a family. We have a tight, diverse and fun group of people from all sorts of amazing and interesting backgrounds. However, York Road is a four lane highway with a central turning lane, essentially making it a five lane highway.

Our futures risk their lives multiple times a day attempting to cross this highway. Many Upper Moreland High School students cross this road to study and play sports. The crosswalk is faded, the words which used to read, "SLOW" are now incomprehensible to my nine year old. How can we expect visitors traveling through to yield?

It appears most drivers have forgotten what plainly marked crosswalk signs indicate.

In the ideal world a protected overpass would be best. However, practically a protected pedestrian crosswalk is needed.

The Upper Moreland Township Commissioners are investigating the proper channels to explore this community project within our municipality and Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, since this is considered a state highway.

Part of our responsibility as citizens it to take ownership of issues affecting our community and being civic minded. This is a fantastic opportunity to inspire our children to be concerned about their community. Moreover, this project is a way to empower our young to be an active member of their community and to show them how their votes do, in fact matter.
