School has changed dramatically ever since quarantine. Both hybrid students (those who attend schools in person two days a week, then the rest of the week remotely) and remote students (those who attend school over video call, 100% remotely) are familiar with flex days. Every Wednesday, all students attend class online for fifteen minutes: this day has been advertised as a catch up day, yet serves the exact opposite for students.

From all students I have spoken to, all express the same feelings of fatigue and stress. Fifteen minutes each class is not enough time for teachers to address every students’s concerns. There is an average of twenty-eight to thirty students in each class. They have to move quickly between video calls for classes, the teachers must take attendance in which some teachers struggle with audio, internet, or lack of knowledge with the applications being used. By the time teachers even make a point across, there is no more time for class, and students must leave. There is no way for students to be able to ask for assistance. All students are forced to attend these classes, or are marked absent. If you are marked absent too many times, it will begin to impact grades negatively. Additionally, teachers do attempt to teach, and not only do they teach nothing, students who do decide to not attend will miss whatever information was able to be said.

There is no way to divide fifteen minutes into twenty-eight or thirty students. There is no time to truly address the needs of the students, nor to teach. These days are not only stressful to students, but for teachers as well. That is why we, as a community, ask for flex days to revised. Allow that Wednesday is closed for students, and instead teachers have office hours to be able to address the concerns of students who truly need assistance. That way, the stress is relieved from both the teachers and students, and will help people on both sides be more efficient.
