Legalize Ferrets in California

The Issue

Despite being the third most popular pet in America, ferrets remain illegal to keep as pets in California. In spite of estimations of more than 100,000 illegal ferrets being kept as pets in the Golden State, it is unlawful to own a pet ferret due to an antiquated law classifying ferrets as wild animals that could harm California's ecosystem upon escape.

Ferrets have been domesticated as pets since ancient times. 97% of all ferrets in the US have been spayed or neutered, so a threat of them getting loose and hurting the California environment is a fallacy, inaccurate, and not backed by science or research. Like a puppy or kitten, ferrets depend on their owners for survival and cannot last out in the wild for even a day.

CA15-0034 is a physical petition being circulated to get signatures to call for a legislative hearing for ferret legalization, but it isn't enough. Our goal is to not only acquire a hearing, but we want to change the law that classifies ferrets as wild animals. The California Committee of Water, Parks, and Wildlife, as headed by a chairman: Assemblyman Marc Levine and vice chairman: Assemblyman Frank Bigelow--along with 13 other assemblymen and women--has the power to change the law and give us a hearing...but we need your help.

We need as many digital signatures as possible to persuade this committee to hear our cause. Nicknamed after my own illegal dying pet ferret, Xavier's Bill is about justice and the freedom to have the third most popular animal in America as pets in our home.

We are here to prove that a small group of people can single handedly change their government. The ferret prohibition needs to end. Please sign this petition and visit www.legalizeferrets.org. Thank you! #XaviersBill #legalizeferrets
