Save Riverbend Historical Park, Werribee

Save Riverbend Historical Park, Werribee
The Issue
Wyndham City Council are making a decision on 14th December 2015 to allow a developer to subdivide and build more high density housing. The land will be subdivided into 49 lots, most of them very small at only 400m2-500m2. Existing trees will be removed from the site. The entrance will be at the existing Purchas Street & Heaths Road roundabout, and the entrance and carpark to the Riverbend Park will remain but be reduced in size and capacity.
The name Riverbend Historical Park, speaks for itself. It is a historical place in Werribee. The site retains some elements dating from the Chaffey period: a well, palm and other trees. There is a slatted barn with concrete floor, and several pieces of farm equipment (plough and dray – brought to the site by the Historical Society). The house has been demolished. Several impacts have been put forward with the residents objections:
Environmental Impacts:
- Environmental impact to the river quality, plants and wildlife
- Heritage impacts, in particular the driveway surrounding trees
Financial Impacts:
- Decreased property values for existing residents
- Social impacts of lower-income, high-density housing in the area
- Potential for multi-dwelling developments (ie. units) on blocks
Health & Safety Impacts:
- Increased traffic congestion and road-related safety concerns
- Accessibility restrictions for park users, especially buses
- Safety risks in an emergency situation due to single entrance to estate
- Narrow roads resulting in limited parking and restricted access for emergency and council vehicles
- Concerns that River Park Court may become a through road to assist with traffic management
- Qualitative impacts such as decreased enjoyment & ambience in the area
Moral Impacts:
- Inconsistency with Wyndham Council’s strategy and policies
We were advised that Council will consider the perspectives of us (the objectors) and also the applicant, and a decision will be made at the next council meeting on 14th December. We are hopeful that Council seriously considers our objections and declines the development proposal in its current form.
The planning permit is WYP8078/14.
