Close down Baan Tai elephant trekking (Koh Phangan)
The Issue
Animal cruelty happens all around the world. Animals are often used as cash cows to attract tourists. After seeing how the elephants are treated at Baan Tai, we decided to take a stand!
There are 3 elephants on site, all chained up 100 metres from each other with no lake or water source to keep them cool in this excruciating heat. Pits of burnt debris sit no more than a metre away from one of the elephants. Hearing the cries of the elephants really tugs on the heart strings. The owners charge 60 baht just to feed the elephant 6 bamboo sticks no bigger than a foot long. The continuous cries and grunts of the elephants paint a bigger picture than being used to generate cash from tourists.
They are poked and prodded with sticks and poles anytime they make a movement. They are deprived off the necessities that elephants need to live and something needs to be done! Elephants are not native to Koh Phangan, so they where transported here solely for this reason.
Our main objective here is to spread word and stop tourists from paying the fee to ride the elephants, our longer term goal would be to find investors or potential suitors to purchase the grounds that they are kept on and surrounding areas eventually turning it into a sanctuary where tourists can come and visit the elephants in a much nicer environment that suits everyone!
While we know that there are thousands of places worldwide that contribute into the mistreatment of animals for a financial purpose, if everyone could just take the time to spread the word, we feel that we could make a positive impact for everyone who visits the island and especially for the elephants who are so badly treated.
