WSFCS School Calendar Change

WSFCS School Calendar Change
The Issue
My name is Will Smith, a concerned student from Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Recently, our 24-25 school year calendar was changed without ample notice and consideration of the communal opinion. I believe that this abrupt modification may have detrimental effects on the wellbeing of students and faculty.
The lack of transparency and consideration for parents' and students' schedules is concerning. Many families rely on the consistency of the school calendar for work, childcare, and other commitments. The sudden change will caused impending stress and inconvenience.
According to a study by Johns Hopkins University, consistent school calendars are crucial for student success as they provide stability and predictability (Johns Hopkins University). Furthermore, it's not just about convenience; it's about ensuring that our children have an optimal learning environment.
As of right now, we will be returning to school on August 12th of 2024. Which would cut our summer break short by approximately two weeks.
We urge the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School Board to revert back to the original school calendar dates. By doing so, they would be respecting family routines and contributing positively towards student success in our community. Please sign this petition if you believe in fair decision-making processes that take into account communal opinion before making significant changes like these.
Thank you!
