Write a Bill! Regulate Generative AI: Protect Autonomy, Job Security and Privacy!!
The Issue
The development of artificial intelligence has had a critical impact on everyone in the United States. With AI programs on the rise, it puts many people at risk in terms of job security, their right to privacy, democracy, being misinformed, and, in extreme measures, national security. Although everyone is affected, working-class people may see the effects the most. As we saw in the SAG strikes, AI heavily threatens the film industry, but it also hurts those in industries where human emotion and feedback are not necessarily common. These fields include, but are not limited to: Receptionists, telemarketers, customer service, retail cashiers, manufacturers, and financial analysts. The substitution of artificial intelligence for these jobs will cause thousands of people to be put out of work, which could negatively impact our economy as well. Artificial intelligence heavily impacts our constitutional right to privacy. This is seen through the use of cookies on websites and governmental social media monitoring. When we accept cookies on a website, AI then processes it and sells your data to companies. This results in spam calls, texts, and mail. The government also uses AI to track our social media accounts. The American Civil Liberties Union published an article written by Shaiba Rather and Layla Al, revealing that the Biden Administration put out programs for the government to monitor the social media use of anyone residing in the United States. People’s accounts are being monitored without warrants or any suspicion of criminal activity. These kinds of programs also negatively affect those seeking visas or lawful permanent residency. The government has turned people away from gaining visas and citizenship due to their social media content, where their religious, cultural, and personal beliefs are the deciding factors, even though the U.S. promotes the acceptance of all religions, personal, and cultural beliefs
- ALL state AI laws that are in place should remain in place and should be expanded to the national level
- Deepfakes using political figures and/or celebrities should be prohibited
- AI should not be allowed to generate any kind of political information
We must act on this sooner rather than later. If things don’t start to change, we will fall deeper into the overdevelopment of generative AI, which collectively hurts Americans. This invasive program will continue to spew misinformation, be used to monitor the social media accounts of all people in the U.S. without any kind of suspicion and continue to put people out of work, which, as previously stated, will negatively impact our economy.
