Appeal to Mr. Low Thia Khiang to return to lead the Workers’ Party

The Issue

Dear Mr. Low Thia Khiang and Members of Workers’ Party CEC,

I write to you with a heavy heart, and with grave concerns over the recent developments from the COP. The journey of the Workers’ Party thus far has not been easy, and we have reached where we are today because we laid our foundations painstakingly, brick by brick. As the Chinese saying goes: “积羽沉舟”, I don’t wish for this incident to be the start of the rot. Hence, I appeal to you and the CEC, to temporarily suspend Mr. Pritam Singh as the Sec-Gen, and for you to be appointed as Acting Sec-Gen until the Courts deliver a judgment. This is only fair to members and supporters of the party.

Ms. Raeesah Khan lied. This is something we must accept, apologize for, and move on. It is still a mistake, even though it wasn’t malicious in nature. However, my concerns are not with her lie, but with how the party’s leadership managed the whole incident, and there are 3 main concerns.

1. Accountability and transparency, The party has been championing these attributes and has been asking the ruling party for more accountability and more transparency. But this incident shows a complete lack of it. It is appalling that the leaders failed to declare their knowledge of the matter, not even to the CEC and cadres.

2. Integrity, Mr. Pritam Singh was not referred to the public prosecutor for his involvement in the untruth, but rather, it was because he was found to be lying under oath/affirmation. Can you imagine the repercussion IF Mr. Pritam Singh were to be found guilty subsequently?

3. Compassion, The manner in which Ms. Low Pei Ying and Mr. Yudhishthra Nathan were callously treated, sends a chill to my heart. They are volunteers, youths, and cadres that contributed much to the party, and this incident, if not properly managed, will surely shake the very foundation of the party’s future.

Therefore, it is imperative that the CEC and Cadres take immediate and decisive steps to rectify the situation. I appeal to Mr. Low and the CEC to go back to our roots, conduct a system reset, and do the right thing. Thank you.
