Save the Amazon River Dolphins

Save the Amazon River Dolphins
The Issue
The Amazon river dolphin, also known as the pink river dolphin or the boto, lives in freshwater. It is found in much of the Amazon and Orinoco river basins in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, and Venezuela. It is classified as vulnerable in certain areas due to dams that fragment and threaten certain populations, and from other threats such as contamination of rivers and lakes.
River dolphins are rapidly disappearing and so are their natural river habitats. Understanding the threats that impact them and protecting them ensures the preservation of their unique habitat. Mercury pollution is one of the main threats to these dolphins. They are from small scale gold mining activities. The river dolphins feed on catfish who are bottom feeders and are affected by the mercury. The World Wildlife fund is trying to protect the river dolphin habitat in the Amazon region. There are a few ways you can help. I will put the link in for the WWF site below. please go there and donate to help their cause.
This petition also has the president of Brazil as the recipient as the only way unintentional catching of these river dolphins can be stopped is if the moratorium comes back. In 2015, the government of Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff put down a temporary 5 year fishing ban to stop the unintentional catching. The ban expired in 2020 and we need to get that ban back otherwise the dolphins will come closer and closer to extinction.
I hope you see what I am talking about and help save this special species of freshwater river dolphins. Thank you for reading this petition and I hope you sign and donate to the WWF and help this cause.
