Change Diabetes T1/T2 Name

Change Diabetes T1/T2 Name

The Issue

Here's a story to depict all the misinformation and miscommunication caused by Diabetes Type 1 and Diabetes Type 2 (separate conditons) having similar names.

*****

Ever been scrolling online, chuckling at a meme made by the dark humour only another fellow Type 1 Diabetic understands... When you get to a comment;

He could reverse his Type 1 Diabetes with Keto diet.

Ofcourse you have. Instantly, you've grabbed a Popcorn box and are invested in the show. Click, click, click. Read through those replies faster than disarming a high glucouse alert.

Reply 1; That's untrue. And even if it wasn't, safely maintaining a constant state of Ketosis with T1 is near impossible.

Op; Yes for most people self discipline is near impossible. Reversing T1 Diabetes is not.

Wow. That's quite the statement.

Now let's call the Op Kire, to keep him anonymous and respect his privacy online- And also, because it is Erik backwards.

Reply 2; Reversing T1 is not currently possible.

Kire; There are cases of people managing and reversing T1 with strict and low carb diets. There is a change of getting back Beta cell productions so "Currently not possible" is a false statement.

Reply 3; My pancreas can't produce insulin.

Reply 4; Ketoacidosis will kill a T1, thats why they eat carbs when blood sugars are low.

Reply 5; T1 is when your pancreas doesn't work, you cannot produce insulin at all. I have no idea where you're getting your information from.

Reply 6; I lost a friend thinking they didn't need to take insulin.

Sesh. Now while most replies disagree with Kire, and are trying to be helpful, there are still some conflicting statements amongst the truths.

Kire; You are all misinformed.

Doesn't make a difference to him. I see he's not listening away.

Reply 7; You're getting your types mixed up bud. That's T2. Explains difference.

Reply 8; Further indepeth explaination on T1/T2, and critiques Kires statement; This is illogical and untrue information leading others to dangerous and potentially fatal behaviour.

Kire; Doesn't give a f*ck. Wrong... Do your research... Who is asking you... You're patently incorrect... There's varying degrees of T1D... You're regurgitating old information, that's okay... Wow you sound intelligent... Every single person here is regurgitating mainstream bullsh*t... Plenty of people manage T1D with a low carb diet... You are the only one spouting illogical and untrue information... Did you read comment? My research is correct...

He's a bit of a d*ck this guy, Kire. He is blatantly and insensitively ignoring the numerous people, experiencing differently. Type 1 Diabetes is not what he has been researching. He has been researching Type 2.

Reply 9; My guy, you're confusing T1 and T2. Kindly and very politely backs up Op that his research may be awesome and true, but for a different condition. Explains the difference. Again. I'm not sure why this reply was so nice, because talking to Kire is like licking a pickled assh*le. Others try too, albeit in a less diplomatic way.

Reply 10; My pancreas is dead. Diet won't revive it.

Reply 11; You're comment is ignorant and inconsiderate considering your providing false information. If I may, keto, and low carb are two completely different things. Keto is NO carbs, and can and WILL kill a T1. Ask an endocrinologist about it. If I could've "put it in remission/cured it" by now, I wouldn't be taking all these shots! Low carb is possible but should be managed carefully and appropriately WITH T1D treatment.

But the only part Kire hears is...

Kire; Thank you for confirming low carb/keto diet is possible to cure T1D.

This reoccuring story, has lead me here!

I'm always open to talk about Type 1 Diabetes and raise awareness. Sometimes unknowingly ignorant people like Kire, who not only spread lethal misinformation but present themselves in a seemingly intelligent, well informed way with real research, is so, so dangerous! His refusal to acknowledge that while this research may support a similarly named, yet different condition, is absolutely infuriating. There's other comments all throughout the thread containing correct and incorrect statements, but he was absolutely the star of the show- And it was all due to his ignorance and unwillingness to accept that despite the similar names, management and treatment of these conditions is different.

How many T1 have experienced this? I see frustrated posts online, daily where DT1 is misunderstood because word association. Wouldn't it just be easier if we lost the number, and had a defining relevant title?! Go back to "Insulin dependent" terms or so?

So here we are my fellow pancreatically challenged friends. A petition titled to change the name of Type 1 and 2 Diabetes to something that doesn't confuse the ignorant! Personally, I think it should be T2 that changes since we are the OGs of the Betes, but I would settle for anything further than one number of separation.

Also it doesn't even matter that it this highly unlikely to make a difference. It just gave me a minute to b*tch about Erik- er Kire.
