Hello all,
Thank you all for sending your emails to Coles and Woolworths. Coles has now officially responded to the petition, see their statement at the bottom of this update.
However, we haven't heard anything from Woolworths. Let's take this further and flood their Facebook page with messages letting them know that 375,000 people are waiting to hear when they are going to remove plastic wrapping from their fruit and veg https://www.facebook.com/pg/woolworths/posts/
Here is the Coles response. Comments welcome.
Coles statement:
"Thank you for contacting Coles to provide your feedback on plastic packaging.
Reducing plastic is very important to Coles, which is why we will be removing single-use plastic shopping bags in states where bans are not already in place on July 1 this year.
We want to assure you that we are making every effort to prioritise the selling of loose fruit and vegetables to minimise packaging as much as possible.
However, there are times when packaging is required to protect the product’s freshness and to ensure food safety from farm to home. For some produce, packaging reduces the incidence of defects such as bruising, crushing and dehydration, resulting in less waste in our stores and for our customers.
If packaging is used, we aim to have the best environmental outcomes by using sustainable options such as recyclable PET or cardboard, which are fully recyclable at kerbside collections.
We are also actively working with our suppliers on more sustainable and recyclable forms of packaging across all products.
In addition, Coles has REDcycle bins in nearly 800 supermarkets to enable customers to return plastic bags and soft plastics, which are then recycled into a range of products including playground and outdoor equipment."
