SAVE WILDLIFE LOWER SPEED ON SILVERDALE RD SILVERDALE, NSW.
The Issue
Did you know that up to 60% of reported wildlife deaths are caused by cars?
Silverdale Rd Silverdale has a very large number of Wildlife , and every single time , I have seen wildlife alive and deceased, on the road whilst travelling from Camden to Warragamba, a road I regularly travel. I find it extremely stressful due to poor visibility and high speed vehicles.
From dusk till Dawn wildlife are most active and the speed limits on Silverdale Rd are from 80-90 km, there is poor visibility especially at night time due to having no street lights and this is extremely dangerous , potentially hitting wildlife such as wombats & kangaroos, as I have almost done myself whilst only driving slow, I refuse to drive any faster than 60 km once night falls.. Wombats ,turtles and echidnas are slow moving animals ,how do we expect them to move at the very last minute, with poor visibility and at speeds of up to 90 km.. it's dangerous and simply does not make sense..
I propose to the council, that we reduce our speed limit to at least 70 km along Silverdale Rd, and give these poor animals a fighting chance. Many of these wildlife are killed, leaving behind defenseless babies without their mothers and leaving Wires to clean up the horrific mess . We can also start alleviating some stress to the wonderful volunteers helping these abandoned babies and injured animals . Yes, and remember, animal welfare such as Wires, are volunteers, they attend animals all hours of the day and night. If we slow down, less fatalities will occur, guaranteed.!!!
These wildlife don't stand a chance on the road so, if you see one and it's safe, turn on your hazard lights, stop the car and do your best to encourage them to move on. It's a good idea to carry gloves in your car for lots of reasons and please call wires.
